Being Bid Night, we were hoping for an earlier start than 4pm so that more of our players could come and then be back on campus for their evening events, but Springfield said their men’s teams had the field until then. We requested shorter halves but they denied that, too. In over 30 years coaching I can’t remember a hosting team denying a visiting team’s request for game length. Hurricane winds and rain were forecast, so we braced ourselves for a difficult day.

There was some rain on the way south, but it subsided for us. ~70F/20C and overcast, we got there in time for a good warmup. We asked again at 3:45 whether we could start early, because the officials and trainer were ready, but Springfield denied again.

Although grass is deemed better than turf, their turf field looked good. We spoke about making good passes to feet and moving the ball quickly.

We did exactly that - we were able to connect a great many of our passes, and our strong defense was expert at building our attack out of the back.

After Eliza earned and took a corner kick, Molly took a free kick from our third before Springfield got off a shot that went wide. Hattie had a shot shot saved before 

placing a perfect shot into the upper left corner of their goal in the 16th minute.

Caitlin earned a corner taken by Hattie before Springfield got a free kick from their third. Then Rachel earned a free kick in our third taken by Molly and Abby R had a shot go over. 

Addie saved a shot before Lana had one go wide. Nicole earned and took a corner before Molly had a shot go high.

Lana slotted a perfect pass to Nicole, whose shot was placed beautifully into the lower left corner of their goal in the 34th minute. Springfield took a free kick in our third before Julia earned a free kick in their third taken by Hattie.

Just before the break, Hattie lofted an amazing shot from perhaps 25m from the right side of the field into the upper left corner of their goal. Their keeper had been difficult to beat, so those three goals were impressive!

During the break, we suggested keeping our intensity and good passing.

Caitlin got off the first shot in the second half - saved - before Springfield’s shot hit our cross-bar (lucky for us!). 

Hattie had shots wide and high before Addie came up with a other save. Eliza had a shot saved before Caitlin earned a free kick in their third taken by Lana, whose shot was saved. We kept their goalkeeper busy!

Maddie had a shot saved in the 58th minute before Caitlin earned a corner kick taken by Abby R. Then Maddie had another shot saved.

Nicole had shots saved and go wide in the 62nd minute just before the hurricane winds came in with some rain. Wind blew over the covered bench where our two subs had been sitting! Luckily no one was hurt! We helped the trainers tilt it over on its front so that couldn’t happen again.

After Abby R’s corner, Lana had a shot saved in the last minute of the game. We hustled off to avoid getting too wet and had a rainy, very windy drive back to campus. 

This was a very memorable game - (only) 13 players who were expert at getting the ball and keeping it by making high-quality passes. No one even seemed tired - they managed the ball so well. The goals were stunning!

Family Weekend for ‘24s and 27s! Eliza’s and Sara’s parents hosted a wonderful lunch after the game! Rachel’s folks, Nathalie’s dad, Maddie Kim’s family, Nicole’s mom and pup in a cute Green t-shirt, Addie’s folks, Hattie’s folks, Abby Reiner’s folks, Chloe’s and Liv’s - AMAZING FANS!

We expected UMass A to be strong since we’ve played them for years. They came out with high pressure and intensity, getting off the first five shots in 19 minutes. Addie kept us in the game with her saves!

After Dani’s free kick, Nicole had a shot saved in the 21st minute. Abby H and Hattie had their shots go wide before Sara earned and took a free kick from their third; Erika’s shot from the left went wide.

Addie came out swiftly to make a key clearance just before the break. We discussed ideas for making more progress in the second half.

Addie came up with another save early in the second half before Eliza earned and took a corner kick. Addie out to catch a UMass cross, preventing an attack.

A UMass shot hit our goal’s crossbar, and Addie got the rebound before she made another save for a corner. After our free kick UMass was awarded a free kick in our third that they were able to head into our goal. Their shot hit our crossbar again, and they got another corner kick.

Eliza had a shot saved in the 67th minute before Sara’s free kick in their third was saved. UMass hit our crossbar again before Addie saved UMass’ free kick from midfield.

Kelly took a free kick in our third before Addie saved a UMass free kick from midfield. Caitlin had her shot saved in the last minute of the game.

Our passing got much better in the second half, and they got very lucky with that free kick. Addie did extremely well to keep us in the game, and it was great to see so many family members! Thanks, again, for Sara’s and Eliza’s parents’ amazing event after the game - it was so nice to see everyone!

Rainy weather from remnants of another hurricane made us brace for a difficult afternoon, but it turned out fine with only some drizzle and 15C/60F temps. Maddie’s folks, Chloe’s mom and Kelly’s grandparents were there!

Both UMass teams have been strong, so we knew we needed to be quick with the ball. Playing on turf is not our first choice - more injurious, makes the ball move overly fast, etc - and the drizzle made the ball move even faster than usual!

Both teams were pressing quickly and neither had much possession, but UMass B got off the first shot that went wide in the 7th minute. Addie saved their second shot seven minutes later.

Nicole, Caitlin and Liv pounded the UMass goal with shots in the 15th minute, resulting in a corner taken by Nicole. She had a shot go wide a minute later. After UMass had a corner and another shot go wide, Nicole had another shot saved.

Nathalie showed her amazing dribbling skills in the 30th minute, getting in behind the UMass defense on the left side of the field and firing a low shot into their net. 

Addie saved two more UMass shots before and after Sara earned a free kick taken by Dani. Sara had a shot saved and earned another free kick from midfield - that shot was saved at the end of the half.

We were delighted to have a goal but knew we had to keep working hard. We were glad to be able to connect more+shorter passes to keep more possession than they had. 

UMass started the second half strongly, with two corners - one that we blocked. They had a shot go wide before Nathalie’s corner kick in the 49th minute.

Hattie had a shot saved before she took a corner kick earned by Dani. UMass had a shot go wide before Addie saved another in the 67th. Abby R got off a great shot that was saved before Nicole’s went high.

Nicole earned a corner kick taken beautifully by Caitlin, and Sara sent the rebound from the right side of the field into the upper left corner of the UMass goal from something like 30m!

This was a hard-earned win with everyone working extremely intensely on a very fast surface for 80 minutes! WAY TO GO!

UVM 23Sep2023

We like playing UVM because they are such a strong team. Some sun, clouds, 60+F/15C - great weather for us. Addie’s grandfather was there, and a strong contingent of students were there cheering, too!

We spoke about being quick with the ball, connecting passes and taking shots to teat their keeper.

Both teams came out strongly with high pressure. UVM got the first free kick awarded as a result of our pressure on them. Avery had a shot saved and Nicole’s hit the post before Addie came up with an important save in the 17th minute.

Maddie did well to block a UVM shot for a corner. After Addie saved another shot, Caitlin’s and Avery’s shots were saved, and Lana had one go wide. UVM had a shot go wide and a free kick from their third before Nicole’s shot was blocked in the 32nd minute.

Rachel earned a free kick in our third when she was fouled in the 34th minute. Then UVM had free kicks from the half and from 20m, but that shot was high.

During the break we spoke about switching the attack and being more diagonal; our passes were good in the first half, so we were happy about that.

We got two free kicks, one earned by Julia in their third, before Nathalie had a shot saved. UVM had a shot wide before Addie saved one; they had two more free kicks before they sent another shot wide.

Addie made another save in the 66th minute from UVM’s free kick from midfield. Hattie had a shot saved before Liv earned a free kick from midfield taken by Kelly, whose shot was saved. 

After UVM’s shot wide and Erika’s free kick earned by Molly, Liv made a game-changing event five minutes from time by earning a free kick from 20m away. Sara devised a plan for a dummy-kick tactic, running over the ball and leaving Lana to fire the ball low into the right corner of their net for an amazing goal.

Addie made two more saves before Abby R had a shot go wide. We were ecstatic for another win, especially against such a strong team!

There were so many remarkable moments in this game! Rachel, Kelly and Molly prevented many attacks by stepping in so well. Sara, Chloe and Erika out-maneuvered UVM on the outside back areas. Nathalie, Liv, Nicole beat UVM to repeated balls and worked tirelessly to win each ball. Avery, Lana, Julia, Hattie, Maddie and Abby R had non-stop play in the middle to connect passes and win back balls from UVM. And Caitlin and others who played up top did well to get in behind UVM’s defense.

Holy Cross, WPI, Assumption 16-17Sep2023

 After four days of tryouts, we were delighted to have eight new members from the Class of 2027: Julia Åkerlind Kermoury, Nicole Bogdanos, Liv Deeley, Chloe Gern, Hattie Hatton, Maddie Kim, Abby Reiner and Addie Winship! After a Friday night team dinner at which they each presented rose/thorn/bud (what was delightful, hard and looking forward to) and spoke about things first-years might want to know, we were ready to head south for two Saturday games with Holy Cross and WPI in Worcester MA and one Sunday home game with Assumption.

Holy Cross had scheduled our game with them for 2pm, to be followed by our game with WPI at 3:30pm, but four days beforehand a new athletics official there decided club sports games should not overlap with varsity games, so they pushed our game times four hours later! The silver lining was that the later time allowed one of our players to be available.

On their new turf field with lines for the other sort of football we started our game with Holy Cross in windy, mostly clear skies and ~20C/70F - good soccer weather. We were delighted that Maddie’s family and Chloe’s brother were there!

We spoke about keeping the ball moving and making good passes.

Erika took a free kick in our third in the first minute, and Holy Cross took one in their third three minutes later. Caitlin spun her magic in the 6th minute with a powerful shot to the lower left side of their goal, putting us on the score sheet.

Genevieve’s shot a few minutes later resulted in a corner taken by Avery, followed by Genevieve’s shot wide. Holy Cross had a free kick in our third, but our wall did well to block their shot. They had another free kick from mid-field that Addie saved for a corner; then they had another free kick that went wide.

Hattie had a shot go high in the 21st minute before Avery’s shot was saved. Avery earned and took a corner kick just before Eliza’s shot went wide. Erika had a free kick in their third just before Addie squashed an attempt on our goal.

In the second half, Nicole sent a shot wide before Liv earned a free kick in their third that was taken by Molly. Caitlin had a shot go wide in the 54th minute before Dani did well to protect our goal in earning a free kick in our goal box. We had one more free kick in our third before Erika’s corner kick and Nathalie’s shot wide.

Worcester Polytech

As the Holy Cross game finished in the dark around 7:20, we didn’t see any lights come on, so we weren’t sure the game with WPI would be possible. But after some phone calls they did come around 8:15. Both teams agreed to 30-minute halves.

We got a free kick from our third in the first minute before Avery had a shot go wide and another saved. Genevieve had a shot saved in the ninth minute before WPI got a free kick in our third. 

Nicole earned a took a free kick in their third in the 19th minute before WPI got a corner kick. Sara had a free kick in their third and WPI had one in our third that went wide.

In the second half, WPI’s free kick in our third was deflected by our wall for a corner kick before a shot from them went wide.

Genevieve earned a corner kick taken by Liv just before Nicole’s shot was saved. Then Addie saved a shot and WPI sent another wide. After their free kick, Eliza and Sara earned a took corner kicks.

Eliza had a shot saved, as did Hattie, whose resulted in a corner for Eliza to take. Maddie’s shot rang off the cross-bar just before Nicole earned a penalty kick that Maddie struck perfectly for the only goal.

Our team was ecstatic to have two wins! We got back to campus just before midnight!

Assumption 

Bright sunshine and warm, our first home game started at 1pm at Sachem. Assumption got an early free kick in their third before we got the ball to Avery for her shot that was blocked. Erika from 30+m sent in a lofted shot that bounced off an Assumption player on its way into their goal in the sixth minute.

Molly blocked a shot before Addie made a save a few minutes later, then Nathalie’s shot was blocked. Genevieve while using her great speed to pass an Assumption defender got tripped and hit the ground firmly on the front of her head; after a long pause with help from Lebanon EMTs she was cleared to sit and watch the rest of the game. She was her usual ebullient self throughout!

Lana took the free kick. Maddie had a shot saved before Liv earned a free kick taken by Chloe. Avery had a shot go wide before Liv earned and took a free kick. Then Assumption had two free kicks in their third.

Nicole streamed in from the right side of the field and slotted her shot into the lower left corner of their goal. Immediate after that Avery’s shot was saved but Hattie put away the rebound into the lower left side of their goal.

Nicole had two shots wide and one saved and Hattie and Julia had shots saved before Erika set up Hattie for her shot to the lower-right side of their goal in the 32nd minute.

Nicole had another shot saved and Assumption put a shot wide before Nicole flew by three defenders on the right side of the field on her way to slotting another shot into the lower left side of their goal in the 35th minute. Assumption got a free kick in their third.

Nicole sent in an arching pass for Eliza to volley into their net. Assumption responded quickly with a pass to their forward who from 30m lofted her shot into the upper left corner of our net.

After the break, Lana went into goal so that Addie could play up top. Assumption took a free kick in our third before Avery had two shots go wide. We continued our shooting binge with Liv’s wide, Erika’s saved, two of Nathalie’s saved, Avery’s and Kelly’s wide, Dani’s over. 

Caitlin set up Kelly’s headed goal in the 59th minute and scored herself four minutes later. Hattie took a free kick in their third that went over before Assumption got a couple free kicks. Then Maddie’s shot was high and Caitlin’s saved. Rachel and Dani had shots go wide.

It was a great weekend for us. We love the new players!

at MIT 29Apr2023

Middlebury was scheduled to come to Hanover but backed out, and no other team was available to visit us, so we were delighted that MIT could host us on a blustery 10C/50F day. Eliza’s parents, Ash’s dad, Claire’s dad and Rachel’s brother from Harvard were there!

Neither team had many subs, so we played 35-minute halves. The crew-cut grass and wind made the field extremely quick, and MIT’s high pressure made for a frantic first half with neither team having sustained possession. 

Ash sent in a high, lofted shot from the left side over the MIT keeper’s head and into the upper right side of their goal in the 4th minute. It was magic.

Caitlin had a shot go high and took a corner earned by Mudia; Ash’s corner kick would have gone in if it hadn’t been saved. 

Caris saved two MIT free kicks before Rachel’s free kick at 22 minutes. Caris saved another MIT shot before Mudia’s shot was also saved.

During the break, we spoke about making shorter passes to feet on the ground in light of our one-substitute situation and the field conditions. That worked - more of our second half passes were connected. 

After MIT had a free kick from their third and a corner kick, Genevieve earned a corner kick taken by Ash. Caitlin had a shot saved and MIT sent a shot wide.

Mudia made a perfect cross from the left side to Genevieve, whose shot went just wide. Abby B’s free kick sailed over the MIT crossbar and Lizzy’s shot was saved before Ash’s free kick in our third.

Genevieve had a shot go over before Caris saved an MIT free kick. They had another corner and a free kick go wide near the end of the half.

Columbia, Princeton & Brown 22-23Apr2023

Brown decided to host the second spring Ivy Tournament after Yale last spring. The drive took about 3 hours to a field owned by Moses Brown School, where we had a 1:30pm game with Columbia. Parents came! Sara’s, who brought treats, Erika’s, Claire’s and Abby’s mom, sister, brother and two pups.

Columbia

We didn’t know what to expect from Columbia - this was our first time playing them. They were very energetic and displayed a high tempo, which meant that neither team could keep the ball much. We earned a corner kick early in the 8th minute that Eliza took beautifully, and Abby had a shot go over their crossbar before Kalā headed the ball just high on a corner kick from Ash.

Columbia got a shot off in the 15th minute, but it was wide of our goal. After Rachel’s free kick, Abby B and Sara had shots go wide. Ash had her shot saved for a corner kick in the 31st minute, after which the ball bounced off a Columbia player into their goal. 

Avery had a shot go wide before Columbia sent a shot easy for Caris to save. Then Sara and Ash had shots saved just before half-time.

Krista got her knee injured during the game, and she felt it was similar to the injury she endured last fall. We are all so hopeful that its recovery can be swift!

After Columbia’s free kick in their third, Lizzy had a really solid shot saved before Mudia from the left side of the field shot the ball perfectly into the right side of their goal. Erika had a shot saved just before Dani set up Caitlin for our third goal.

After Lizzy’s two corner kicks, Mudia got herself in just the right place in a crowded goal box to put in another goal in the 56th minute. Avery had a nice shot saved before Kelly R’s free kick in our third and Lana’s blocked shot. 

Avery had another shot go wide and Kelly R had her shot saved before Sara earned a corner taken by Ash, after which Genevieve’s shot was blocked and Kelly R’s shot went high. Lizzy or Abby B had a shot go wide before Columbia put a free kick over our crossbar.

Dani earned a corner taken by Zanna in the 72nd minute, followed by Claire’s shot over their crossbar. Mudia had her shot go wide just before the end of the 80 minutes.

Princeton

We also hadn’t played this team before, and they also showed lots of energy and high pressure, but Sara and Avery got off the first shots (wide) before Abby B and Ash had their shots saved. Avery earned and took a free kick in the 7th minute that bounced off their crossbar.

Lana had a shot go wide before Ash earned and took a free kick in their third; Mudia had a shot go wide. Caris saved Princeton’s first shot in the 14th minute and then saved another five minutes later for a corner. 

Lizzy had a shot saved before Claire’s free kick from the half. Then Genevieve’s shot went over. Princeton had two free kicks before Zanna’s shot was saved.

Genevieve, in textbook fashion, from the right sent the ball into the upper left side of their goal in the 29th minute. After Princeton’s free kick from their third and Ash’s from our third, Caris made another key save on their free kick in our third in the 34th minute.

Kelly R blocked a Princeton shot and then Caris saved another in the 36th minute before Ash had a shot saved. Then Eliza crossed the ball perfectly from the left for Mudia to tap into the Princeton goal. Kelly R had a shot go wide just before the break.

After Lizzy’s corner and Princeton‘s free kick from the half, Genevieve did her magic again in the 52nd minute by sending a shot from the right into the left inside netting of the Princeton goal. In the very next minute she had another shot saved. Same for Ash six minutes later.

After Avery’s corner and free kicks from Ash and Princeton, Sara had a shot saved and another blocked just after another free kick by Ash.

Lizzy had a shot go wide and Zanna had one go over before Abby B earned and took a free kick in their third that went high. Caris saved a Princeton free kick to keep a clean sheet just before Lizzy had another shot saved in the last minute.

Brown

Last year we beat Brown even though they outshot us, so we expected they would present a very competitive match. The lightning delayed our Sunday morning start, but the persistent rain and wind presented a big challenge especially with 10C/50F temperatures and a slick turf football field.

Brown was quick to pressure us, and they got off the first shot in the 18th minute - handily saved by Caris. After Abby B earned a free kick, Brown had two corners with one shot that we blocked before they fired a low shot from 25m out on the right side into the lower-left side of our goal. 

They had a free kick in our third before Rachel took one from the half. Then Brown sent a shot over our crossbar and had one more corner kick before the break.

Brown sent in a shot blocked by Kelly R before they scored again five minutes into the second half. Caris made another big save five minutes later.

Mudia had a wonderful chance in the 55th minute, but her shot went high. Caris came up big again by saving a Brown free kick in our third, followed a minute later by another huge save.

Erika had two excellent free kicks in their third - one went high and one was saved. In our last set of substitutions ten minutes from time, Sara one-timed Avery’s free kick unexpectedly sent square across the field to her from the right side of the field into the upper left corner of their goal. 

Caris came up huge again in the 73rd minute by saving another Brown rocket-shot. They had another shot go high before Molly had a free kick from the half.

We were happy to have played so hard in difficult conditions and to have scored on them. Drenched, we might have been relieved not to have to stay for another game in very poor weather! CONGRATULATIONS, Semi-Finalists!!
