UMass B 28Sep2024

UMass is so big that they have two teams, so we play one team here and one in Amherst. Their Minutewomen B team is often able to beat us when we beat the A team, and we never know how we will do with either team.

Parents Weekend! I saw or heard that parents of Nathalie, Kalyn, Mia, Colleen B, Kya, Katlyn, Hattie and Abby R were here - SO GREAT! Kate kindly offered to take photos!

We spoke about impressing the parents, being assertive and keeping the ball moving.

Kalyn wasted no time getting in front of their goal with a shot in the 5th minute that was saved but rebounded to Nathalie, who put the ball into their net. After two UMass corner kicks, Kalyn had another chance, but her shot went over their crossbar.

Caitlin earned a corner kick in the 13th minute that was taken by Erika - her shot was saved. Hattie had her shot saved in the 20th minute, but she wasn’t taking no goal for an answer because two minutes later her shot placed in the upper-left area of the net gave their keeper no chance.

Addie saved a UMass free kick in the 26th minute before another shot of theirs went high. Mia registered her interest in a goal with a shot saved in the 32nd minute before Kalyn had another shot saved - this time for a corner taken by Erika.

Erika took another corner kick before she had a free kick saved for another corner kick she took. Her kicks are so powerful and accurate. UMass had a shot go wide before Katelyn earned a free kick in midfield that was taken by Nicole.

During the break we suggested taking more shots, stepping up to prevent UMass shots, making more use of diagonal passes and runs and using the quick speed of the ball to keep possession.

Carly used her immense skill in the 45th minute to place a free kick from midfield onto Hattie’s head for our third goal - a beautiful play! Lizzy had a shot saved soon after. UMass a corner kick well gathered by Addie before one of their shots went high.

Erika took another well-placed corner kick before Pine earned a free kick in their third that was taken by Nicole. Katelyn had her powerful shot blocked. UMass took a free kick from midfield before Katelyn had another shot blocked, and Colleen B tidily tucked the rebound into the lower-left side of their goal in the 58th minute.

Colleen B had a shot saved for a corner kick taken by Erika before UMass had two corner kicks, one resulting from Nathalie’s valiant block of a shot they took. They had a shot go wide before Hattie had one go high and Caitlin had one saved. After UMass took a free kick from their third, Abby R earned a free kick from midfield taken by Colleen C.

Chloe did well to get upfield, sending a great shot on-target that was saved in the 71st minute after which UMass had a free kick from their third, a shot go wide and another bounce off our upright!

Pine also did exceptionally well to get forward often, and in the 76th minute got all the way up near the end line where she looked and then crossed the ball to Kalyn, who one-touched it for a tap-in.

Mia almost scored when she did a sweet fake, then turned and shot the ball on-target for a save.

Everyone knew this was good football -‘our good passing and runs off the ball were brilliant, and the perfect weather and amazing parent attendance contributed valuably!

at Holy Cross 22Sep2024

Windy and cloudy with temps around 60F/15C, we were annoyed that Holy Cross changed game time to 11:30 from 1pm - meaning that we had to leave at 8am. But that meant getting back to campus earlier, so that was a plus. Usually Holy Cross is not as difficult an opponent as WPI, but sometimes anything can happen!

We were delighted to see fans there! Chloe’s family and maybe Maddie’s?

With Erika busy with a big project, it was great that Colleen Cranna was willing to play center defense. We also gave Nicole some time up front, based on her wishes and her amazing goals last year.

We spoke about playing to feet on the ground given the fast turf surface.

Holy Cross was aggressive but our passing looked good and led to Lizzy’s corner kick in the 5th minute. After Kalyn’s excellent cross, Nathalie got off a good shot. Nicole took a free kick in the 10th minute before Carly’s excellent header in the 13th minute.

Addie adeptly saved a Holy Cross free kick in the 25th before Colleen C and Hattie got off shots. Holy Cross got lucky after a corner kick landed in a very crowded goal box. Addie made the save but the ball was deemed to have gone over the goal line.

During the break we discussed the poor rapport among Holy Cross players - something we don’t see often. We also noted their low pressure, suggested playing to feet and having the whole team move up the field together.

Hattie and Katelyn both got off shots in the second half, and Addie made a bid save near the end of the game. We deserved a better result, but often the better team doesn’t win!

WPI 21Sep2024

Having played in Worcester last fall, it was WPI’s turn to come north. With great 70F/20C soccer weather and some leaves beginning to turn, we were delighted to see Lizzy’s parents and Nicole’s mom! Given some history of physically aggressive playing by WPI, we suggested keeping the ball moving.

We made good passes and had good possession right away. Lizzy took a free kick in the 5th minute in their third before her corner kick and Kalyn’s shot saved. WPI got a corner kick soon after, and Maddie took a corner kick in the 15th minute.

Hattie and Katelyn had shots saved before Addie saved one from WPI. After Lizzy’s corner in the 24th minute, Liv had a shot go wide. Then Abby B had a shot saved just before Mia’s magic gave us our first goal in the 29th.

Abby R had her shot saved before our momentary lapse gave WPI their second shot that they converted to tie the game. Abby R had a shot go wide before Julia’s was saved and Kalyn’s went over their crossbar.

Katelyn came up big with a powerful and well-placed shot into the upper left side of the WPI net to give us the go-ahead goal in the 37th minute. Lizzy earned and took a free kick in their third that was saved.

Nathalie outran three WPI defenders and scored by herself in the 39th minute. Just after that her shot was saved.

During the break we discussed taking advantage of WPI poor 1st touches, using shorter passes, switching the ball to the other side, taking more shots, running with the ball if there is no pressure on it, and making more diagonal runs and passes.

WPI took the first shot in the second half, but it went wide. Erika had a shot saved before Addie made a huge save from a powerful shot from WPI. Dan took a corner before Kalyn had shots that went high and then saved for a corner taken by Abby R.

Abby B had a shot saved in the 61st minute before WPI had a shot go wide and took a free kick in our third.

Nicole earned a corner kick taken by Nathalie before WPI had a free kick from midfield and a shot go wide. Maddie had a shot saved for a corner taken by Lizzy before WPI had a free kick in our third and took a shot saved by Addie in the last minute of the game.

We were delighted to pass so well and to create so many chances and take so many shots. Nicole’s puppy made it into our team photo!

at UVM 20Apr2024

Seeing nine players at our time to leave, some scrambled to asked others - even friends. Liv knew Maddy Fisher was an excellent player from Minnesota but had pneumonia during tryouts, so she was delighted to join us!

UVM hosted us at 2pm at Centennial Field (grass) and offered for our GK a player Kalyn knew from Marin!

We’ve played on Centennial before, with some memorable moments - once when one of their players was shown a yellow card and another in pouring rain. But UVM has always been a reliable competitor, so we look forward to playing them!

Liv got an early free kick in midfield before Caitlin earned another in their third - our shot on target was shot saved. Then UVM had a shot saved before their corner kick was caught by our GK under loan. Another UVM shot was saved before Lizzy’s on-target free kick in their third was punched out.

Around that time, after Maddy released the ball with a pass, a UVM player collided with her with and injured her knee. Teammates carried her off and the ref provided coolant.

Nathalie took free kick in midfield before UVM sent a shot over our cross-bar. We were very tempted to leave so Maddy could get treatment at DH, but she and the team decided to play another shortened half.

UVM had two shots saved and Nathalie had the last, giving us a surprisingly pleasant tie result to help balance the sadness of Maddy’s injury. Once we got back to campus, Liv went with Maddy to Dick’s House for crutches and then to DH.

Ivy Tournament at Brown 13-14Apr2024

Brown for a second year hosted the 3rd Annual Ivy Tournament in Providence with games on Saturday vs Yale and Princeton and a final on Sunday vs Brown. Columbia and Cornell dropped out, so there were only four teams this time.

Rainy on Saturday but nicer on Sunday, the weather was an improvement over last year’s driving rain for our game with Brown.

Impressively, Krista Schemitsch and Abby Headstrom came even though they were not yet game-ready to play! Special thanks to Krista for recording notes on Saturday’s games while coach was en route from a Colorado family ski trip!

Fans came! Abby R’s dad, Chloe’s parents+pups, Eliza’s boyfriend+pup, Abby B’s sister and mom, maybe others?

We had done well versus Yale and Princeton in previous Ivy Tournament games, but Brown has always been a special opponent, with our 2:1 win over them 2 years ago to win the final and a 1:2 loss to them last year in driving rain.

Genevieve scored again six minutes later before Hattie’s shots and Abby B’s free kick. Nicole, Avery and Nathalie had shots before Genevieve’s third goal in the 78th minute, giving her a cherished hat-trick!

Then Addie came up with another save before Nicole, Hattie, Nathalie, Eliza and Avery made shots and Abby B had a free kick.

Nicole scored in the 33rd minute just before Princeton equalized, then she scored again before Abby B and Nathalie took shots. Nicole secured her hat-trick in the 39th minute and took another shot soon after, followed by Lizzy’s free kick. Then Genevieve got off a shot just before she scored our fourth goal in the 61st minute.

Brown shots 8:21 saves 9:4

They were physical, tall, grabbed our jerseys (don’t see much of that in our games) and imposing on set plays.

After Eliza prevented Brown from scoring in the 13th minute, Addie made a save from  brown shot, but their tall payers out-jumped us for the first two goals on corner kicks.

Liv blocked a Brown shot just before Addie made another save. Lizzy earned a free kick in midfield taken by Molly before Hattie earned another free kick taken by Kelly, whose shot was on target and saved for a corner.

Playing on turf with multiple sets of lines made it easy to explain away a yellow card for handling the ball outside the box that set up their free kick on our 18 for their third goal. Brown had a shot go wide before Eliza prevented another Brown shot.

Addie did very well to get her fingers on a shot driven powerfully by Brown, but it was unstoppable. Avery’s corner kick found Chloe, whose shot on target was saved.

Avery took another corner kick before Addie made two more saves on a Brown attempts, and Sara provided a clearance on a Brown corner kick.

Nicole earned a free kick in midfield taken by Kelly, whose fine placement found Caitlin, but her header went just wide. After Brown sent two more shots wide, Addie saved another one before they sent a shot on a free kick over our cross-bar.

Addie made another save in the 59th minute but Brown converted on the rebound. Abby B earned a free kick from midfield taken by Molly before Sara had her shot go over their cross-bar.

Brown’s header from a corner kick went wide before Addie made another save in the 72nd minute. Kalyn’s shot was blocked for a corner taken by Abby R, whose aim found Sara, but her ensuing header went wide.

Addie made yet another save - her 9th - before Kalyn’s shot was saved for a corner taken by Lizzy.

Brown has always been a strong team, and it’s good to play strong teams! We were happy with our two wins and appearance in the Ivy Tournament final.

Regionals 28-28Oct2023 Georgetown, Cornell, RIT

We were delighted to make Regionals, having gained invitations in 2013, 2017, 2022, and we were seeded 17th (24th last year), so it meant that we would face Georgetown (20th), Cornell (5th) and RIT (8th). Sometimes we get hammered at this tournament and other times we fare well, but it’s good to play good teams and our players were excited to go!

Hosted in Stony Brook, Long Island, we left around 4pm and arrived at our hotel in Farmingville around 10pm. We investigated the ferry from Bridgeport, but that would have cost another $500 for two vans and passengers, so we went through the City - Rachel’s van stopped near her home for dinner!

We left our hotel a little after 8am Saturday for the field 22min away, checked in and warmed up. Already 20C/70F - looked like summer was back! Rachel’s dad, Bob, brought drinks and snacks, and her mom came later; we also were so happy to see Eliza’s parents, Erika’s mom, Nicole’s parents and Dartmouth t-shirt-clad pup, Maddie’s parents and Sara’s mom!! I spotted some very impressive treats after the second game on Saturday - thanks!

Georgetown

Our previous experience with Georgetown in the 2013 Regional Tournament resulted in a 2:1 win for us. This Georgetown team was rough - we suffered two concussions!

We were on extremely short, wet grass, which made the ball move very quickly and bounce unpredictably. They put immediate high pressure on us.

After their corner and their shot wide, they snuck the ball away from us near our goal for a shot from left to right into our goal in the 5th minute. Then Addie saved their shot for a corner three minutes later and again right after that.

Eliza earned a corner taken by Liv before Addie made another save in the 21st minute. Addie caught a Georgetown corner kick before Eliza’s corner kick and Georgetown’s free kick from midfield just before the break.

Liv earned and took free kick from our third early in the second half before Addie made another save in the 44th minute. Rachel earned and took free kick from our third and a free kick from midfield before Georgetown sent a shot over our cross-bar.

Addie made another save in the 53rd minute and Chloe blocked a shot for a Georgetown corner. Then Addie made another save for a corner before they scored on a shot from left to right in the 69th minute for their second goal.

Nicole had her shot go wide and another shot saved before she earned and took a corner kick in the last minute.

Cornell

After a short break for lunch, we got back to Stony Brook for our 3:30pm game with Cornell. The thermometer on the van dashboard said 85F, and we were scheduled for the turf field, which makes high temperatures seem even higher.

Our last experience with Cornell was at the Ivy Tournament hosted by Yale in April of 2022, when we beat them 1:0. They were a very vocal (noisy?) team we overheard during our first game when they played RIT.

A lucky exchange for Cornell by our goal in the 3rd minute gave them their first goal, but Sara got a good chance soon after with shot that was saved. Cornell sent a shot wide before Erika blocked a shot of theirs for a corner - Addie saved their ensuing shot.

Eliza had her shot go wide after Cornell’s corner; then in the 12th minute Cornell’s shot from right to lower-left gave them their second goal.

Sara earned free kick from midfield taken by Erika before Rachel earned free kick from our third. Nicole had her shot saved before Sara earned free kick in their third taken by Lana, whose shot was saved. Then Sara took a free kick from their third.

Liv had her shot saved in the 24th minute before Molly took a free kick from midfield. Addie saved three shots before Lana subbed in for her when her hip became painful after a sideways dive.

Cornell got their third goal in the 38th minute by shooting from right to upper-left of our goal. Erika took a free kick in their third, but her shot was saved just before the break.

Nicole earned a free kick from midfield early in the second half that was taken by Rachel before Rachel had her shot go wide. Cornell sent a shot over our cross-bar before scoring their fourth goal with a shot from left to lower-right off the upright in the 51st minute. They also had a free kick from midfield.

Chloe’s shot in the 56th minute went wide before Rachel earned a free kick in our third taken by Lana. Lana saved a Cornell shot before they sent two shots wide

Chloe earned a free kick in our third taken by Lana before Cornell scored from a cross from the left side for a tap-in. Sara’s free kick in their third was promising, but our header went wide.

RIT

We experienced a big drop in temperature to 50sF/10C with drizzle for our 9:30am Sunday game with RIT on a another bumpy field with very short grass that made ball-control challenging. Their uniforms showed orange and white emblazoned with “Tigers” - so Princeton are not the only Tigers.

In light of our two previous game results and being down to one sub, we could have already felt defeated, but we acted to the contrary!

Sara sent RIT an immediate message by making the game’s first shot that went wide before Rachel took a free kick from midfield, earned and took free kick from our third and had her shot go wide. It seemed from the sidelines that we were believing in ourselves and playing better than ever!

Lana shut down an RIT attempt in the 15th minute before RIT from maybe 20m sent a high-arching shot into the upper-right corner of our goal.

Lana made a big save in the 20th minute before Nathalie had her shot saved for a corner that was taken by Sara. Eliza took two more corner kicks due to their clearances, and a few minutes later Sara’s header was saved.

RIT sent a shot over our cross-bar before Chloe blocked a shot for an RIT corner. They had another corner kick with another shot Lana saved, followed soon after by two more shots she saved. Then they sent a shot wide, took another corner kick and had another shot go wide before Nathalie earned a corner taken by Erika at the end of the half.

During the break there were many suggestions from our players about how to proceed, and we were fired up - staying very positive!

Rachel took a free kick in their third before RIT sent a shot wide. Lana made another save before Eliza cross earned and took a corner kick.

Lana made four more saves in quick succession before Nicole showed her high quality getting near their goal for a shot they saved in the 56th minute. Lana made yet another save after RIT’s corner kick.

Nicole gave us the equalizer with her shot from right to left in the 63rd minute, and she followed that up with a shot that was saved.

Lana came up with another save in the 70th minute before Sara made a shot reminiscent of her goal versus Brown last spring from the right side of the field into the upper-left corner of their goal for the game-winner.

Lana made her 13th save of the game in the last minute of the game after RIT took free kick in our third. RIT must have been shocked with that result, having out-shot us, but it was our quality, resilience and positivity that helped us get a much-deserved win!
