Middlebury 28Sep2025

Our second Family Weekend game! Kat’s dad (from Alaska!) and sister came, Molly’s parents, and perhaps others who were with us yesterday. Middlebury asked for a 15-minute delay to our 1pm start time due to some of their drivers taking longer to arrive. No problem - we had really nice weather again.

We spoke about making quick diagonal passes and diagonal runs.

After Nicole’s corner kick, Middlebury had a free kick in their third, Avery had a shot saved and Colleen B had a shot over their crossbar. Katelyn had a shot go wide, Avery had a shot go over their crossbar and Nicole had a shot saved.

Most of the play was in their half of the field. Nicole earned and took a corner kick before Colleen B had a shot saved. After Mia H’s corner kick, Colleen B had a shot go wide. In the 14th minute, Middlebury took a free kick in their third before Nicole sent a rolling shot from the right side of the field into the lower left corner of their net for our first goal.

Middlebury had a free kick on our 18, but their shot went over our goal’s crossbar. After Nicole had a shot go wide, Carly set up Katelyn’s goal in the 18th minute to double our advantage. Four minutes later, Molly sent a firmly struck rolling shot from the right side of the field into the lower left side of their net.

Ten minutes later, Nicole’s barely wide shot hit the upright of their goal.

Middlebury had a shot go wide and a free kick from midfield before Mia J earned a corner kick that was taken by Nicole. Molly took a corner kick and had a shot saved in the last minute of the half.

During the break, we suggested that our defensive backs could be closer together,  that we were a little flat in midfield and that we could make ourselves more calm. We noted that Middlebury’s quick passing signified that we should not discount their offensive capabilities. We recommended more give-and-go passes.

Avery’s shot in the 43rd minute was blocked, and she had another shot go wide before Middlebury took a free kick from midfield. Nicole had a shot saved before Chloe saved a shot from Middlebury. Erika and Nicole had shots squelched before Chloe saved another shot from Middlebury.

Erika had a shot saved and Colleen B had two shots saved before Nicole earned a free kick at midfield and Middlebury took a free kick in their third. In the 58th minute, Katelyn had a shot saved and soon after that Middlebury sent a shot wide.

Nicole had a shot blocked before Mia J earned and took a free kick on their 18 - her shot was saved. Middlebury had a shot go barely over after glancing off our crossbar.

Pine had a shot go wide before Middlebury’s free kick in their third. They had a corner kick before Mia J had shots go over and saved.

Molly earned a free kick from midfield before Middlebury took a free kick from midfield and had a rolling shot saved by Sage. Then two minutes before time, Middlebury tucked a high arching shot under our crossbar to give them some reward for their efforts. Nicole had another shot saved in the last minute.

Holy Cross 27Sep2025

FAMILY WEEKEND!!! So great to see so many family members for our game! Kelly’s, Avery’s, Dani’s, Abby’s, Genevieve’s, Erika’s, Kat’s, Neva’s, Mia J’s, Meg’s, Molly’s, others?!

Last year we lost 0:1 at Holy Cross, so we were intent on a better result today. The weather could not have been better! 20+C/70+F, partly cloudy and still.

We spoke about keeping the ball moving quickly and making diagonal passes and dribbles. Both teams showed quick movement to try to retain possession, but Avery wasted no time to get off the first shot in the 4th minute - saved.

A minute later Nicole earned and took a corner; the ensuing shot was saved. She had a shot saved three minutes later. Avery had a shot go wide, and Katelyn had two shots go wide before Milla came up with a huge save in the 29th minute during her valuable stint in goal.

After Mia J’s shot that went wide in the 30th minute, Holy Cross took a free kick in their third. Then Nicole showed her tremendous quality by beating her defenders and slotting a shot from the left side of the field into the right side netting for our first goal in the 32nd minute.

Immediately after that Kya made give-and-go passes to set up Neva, whose shot from the left side of the field went into to right corner of their goal.

Seconds later, Mia J showed immense composure to score our third goal and repeated her magic three minutes later for our fourth! Kat earned a free kick from midfield just before the break.

During half-time we applauded our switching our attack, our stepping to win the ball and our increased domination - and playing more to feet was suggested.

After Genevieve took a free kick in their third, Erika took a corner kick leading to a shot saved. Holy Cross sent a shot wide and had a corner kick from which Katelyn made a save.

Genevieve had a shot go wide before Nicole again showed her amazing dribbling skills past several defenders, but her ensuing shot in the 50th minute was saved. Then Mia H had a shot go over their crossbar.

Colleen B earned a free kick in midfield that was taken by Pine before Nicole had another shot saved in the 57th minute. Holy Cross took a free kick in our third just before Pine prevented a scoring opportunity that resulted in a Holy Cross corner.

Mia J again demonstrated her calmness in making a cut to avoid a defender and then slotting the ball just past the outstretched foot of the Holy Cross goalkeeper so that ball rolled diagonally from the right into their side netting next to the left upright in the 60th minute.

Milla had a shot saved and Pine had a shot go over their crossbar before the  stoppage for a Holy Cross player who was down for an extended time. Afterwards, Kya had a shot go wide and another shot saved before Erika’s corner kick and Genevieve’s shot that went wide.

We were delighted to see so many fans and are so very thankful for Avery’s parents for the wonderful lunch they served after the game!

at Springfield 21Sep2025

Two years ago when we last played at Springfield, there was powerful hurricane-related wind that knocked over our seating structure, so we were happy for perfect weather this time! Rush started today, and there were many other conflicts, so we were down to 13 players. But we were excited to play nonetheless!

Mia J’s parents were there and maybe others?

We spoke about keeping the energy level high and taking care of the ball with good passes. After Springfield took a free kick in our third, Kelly took one in our third and Molly took a corner kick before Avery had a corner kick and two shots go wide.

Pine had a shot go wide before Nicole earned a free kick at midfield that was taken by Kelly in the 27th minute. Then Colleen B earned and took a corner kick before Mia J provided a powerful shot that their goalkeeper could not contain - Avery got the rebound for our goal in the 31st minute.

Nicole earned a corner that was taken by Colleen B; then Emeline took a corner kick before Springfield’s (first) shot in the 40th minute went wide.

During the break we noted our good challenges for every ball but pointed out that we sometimes got trapped along the sides. We suggested that we keep better possession, keep communicating and maintain our composure in their third.

After Avery and Genevieve had shots saved, Nicole earned a corner that was well taken by Molly; Genevieve had a shot go wide. Molly’s shot was saved, and Mia J’s shot hit the upright! Nicole’s shot was blocked.

Springfield’s corner in the 58th minute led to an equalizer. After their free kick, Colleen B saved two shots before they scored again after a free kick from midfield.

Nicole earned free kick taken by Molly before Springfield took a free kick in their third. Nicole had two shots saved before Mia J had one go over their crossbar.

After Springfield’s free kick in their third Mia J earned a free kick that was taken by Colleen B; Mia’s next shot was deflected for another corner also taken by Colleen B. Then Emeline’s shot was saved. After Molly’s corner kick, Emeline had another shot saved. Pine saved a Springfield shot just before time.

We were happy to have played so well and to have had so many scoring chances!

at WPI 20Sep2025

We last played at WPI four years ago on their turf field above a parking garage - a large, fast surface. Today we had blue skies, no wind with 20C/70F temperatures for our game at 2pm.

We arrived strong and confident with 21 players including 7 or our 8 new amazing players and Colleen Cranna in support but not quite ready to play. Our goalkeeper, Addi Winship, is on the Geology Stretch trip this fall, so Genevieve, Chloe, Pine and Sage offered to play GK.

We spoke about moving the ball quickly to avoid being tackled.

Somehow WPI earned a free kick in their third in the 6th minute before Nicole earned a corner kick a few minutes later minutes later. Mia H had her shot saved before a WPI corner kick and a other free kick in their third. We had a free kick in our third before Katelyn earned a free kick in their third taken by Nicole whose shot was blocked.

In the 16th minute WPI took a free kick in their third before Nicole had a shot saved. She followed that up by showing her immense speed and composure with a shot slotted into the lower left side of their net from the right side of the field for our first goal in the 2nd minute. She had another shot a minute later that went wide.

Chloe saved WPI shots that were wide in the 28th and 31st minutes; then WPI had a free kick in our third before Mia J showed her skill and composure to slot the ball into the lower left corner from the right side of the field in the 39th minute.

Then WPI took a free kick in our third that went wide but was saved by Chloe, and
Neva had a shot saved before she took a corner kick.

During the break we applauded our defense and improved, more-diagonal passing during the half and were happy that we became more calm with the ball. We suggested switching more from one side of the field to the other and being ok with taking the ball backwards to keep possession.

Soon after the second half started, we had a free kick from midfield just before Mia H sent her header wide. Pine saved a WPI shot soon after. A few minutes later, Avery earned a free kick in our third that was taken by Carly. In the 49th minute, Colleen B made a lovely cross for Avery to send the ball into the lower left side of their net for our third goal.

After WPI’s free kick in our third, Avery set up Katelyn’s goal in the 55th minute. Then Sage had a shot go wide before WPI took a free kick in their third. Mia H had a shot go over their crossbar before Neva earned and took a corner kick that led quickly to Mia J’s gorgeous volley in the 66th minute.

Near the end of the game, Genevieve and Molly had shots go wide. We were so proud of how both the returning and the new players gelled so quickly to show their skills!

UVM 26Oct2024

We have been grateful to UVM over the years for offering to play twice in the fall - they saw this as good preparation for Regionals (they and UMass A had 6 wins and 1 draw with the same goal-advantage so both made Regionals), and we saw it as a good way to honor the seniors and to have another chance to play well with a strong team.

Abby B’s mom, sister and pups, Caitlin’s grandmother, Lizzy’s family, Avery’s mom, maybe others (?) joined us in partly-sunny 60F/15C weather. Avery made a comeback today, Kate graciously offered to goal-keep in light of Addie’s illness, and Dani is preparing for the New York Marathon next weekend!!

Kalyn got off a shot in the 2nd minute that was blocked for a corner kick taken by Lizzy before Carly’s clearance for a UVM corner and shot over our crossbar. Avery had a shot saved and Kate saved a UVM shot before Colleen C blocked a UVM shot for their corner kick in the 9th minute.

Abby B had a shot go wide soon after, and five minutes later Nicole beat her defender to get a cross off for Hattie, whose shot was blocked in tje 15th minute. Kate saved another UVM shot before Carly’s free kick in their third went slightly wide.

Kate made another save after UVM sent a shot over our crossbar. Carly earned and took a free kick in our third just before Mia combined with Colleen B for our goal in the 30th minute.

UVM hit our crossbar after their corner kick (whew!) before Colleen earned a free kick in their third that resulted in Hattie’s header but was saved in the 36th minute. UVM took another corner and had a shot that we blocked before Kate made a brave excursion far from goal to squash a UVM attempt.

During the break we complimented Kate and our back line, encouraged more shutting down attacks and connecting passes well as we did in the first timeframe. We congratulated Hattie on her wonderful DIAGONAL SPEED DRIBBLE and suggested pressure on UVM’s central defenders.

Kate made three more saves amid a UVM corner before their long-distance shot snuck into the upper-left corner of our goal just under the crossbar in the 52nd minute. They sent a shot wide before Katelyn earned a free kick in their third that was taken by Colleen C.

Kate made two more saves before UVM sent a shot over our crossbar. They took a free kick in our third that went wide before Kate made another save.

Kalyn had a shot saved before Kate made another save and UVM sent a shot over our crossbar. Then in the last minute Kalyn used her amazing speed to blow by the UVM back line in a breakaway - calmly tucking the ball into their net for the game-winner!

Our team erupted in joy and after thanking UVM for playing had a beautiful senior celebration!

at UVM 13Oct2024

We had planned to play UVM on Oct 19, expecting that our League games would need to have been played two weeks before Nov2 Regionals - that way, we would have had one game per weekend. But the League changed the timeframe so that all of our games had to be played *three* weeks before Regionals. We had no choice but to squeeze two away games into the last weekend.

So we expected to have trouble with attendance with back-to-back away games so far into the term when academic work is heavy. We were actually fortunate to have enough players - with one sub - to play and not forfeit, which can lead to being ejected from the League.

Leaving Hanover at 9:30 in 40F/5C weather, by noon it was maybe 50F/10C and cloudy but not windy. The grass field was narrow and bumpy - not very well covered - almost the opposite of Sachem. They insisted on 40-minute halves in hopes of gaining a better goals-scored record than UMass A, with whom they expected to have the same 6W-0L-1T record with a win over us today.

Nicole got us off to a great start with a shot that went wide. UVM sent in a lofting shot from maybe 20m that just dipped under our crossbar in the 8th minute. Kate made a save right after that before Kalyn had a shot go wide and Kya’s pressure on them made their shot go wide in the 16th minute.

Mia earned a corner in the 19th minute before Caitlin earned and took a corner four minutes later and Kalyn had a shot blocked. UVM’s shot was blocked for a corner and had two shots go wide before they sent in a shot lower right that Kate dove the right direction for but couldn’t reach.

Nicole had a shot go wide in the 33rd minute before Kate made another save and UVM had another shot go wide. Kate made another save just before the break.

Our discussion included a reference to basketball, our solid defense, their kick-and-run tactics, how we could move the ball more quickly, that aerial battles were rough, we could shoot more from a farther distance, double up more in the midfield and make the shorter/easier passes to keep possession.

Caitlin almost scored in the first minute of the second half before Kate made two more saves resulting in their corner kick. Kalyn earned a free kick in our third taken by Carly.

Mia’s powerful shot in the 47th minute rattled off the crossbar before UVM’s free kick from midfield. Kate made another save and UVM took another corner before they scored their third goal in the 52nd minute.

Nicole had a shot go wide before Kate made two more saves and they had a shot go over our crossbar. Carly earned and took a corner in the 68th before Colleen C had a shot saved and took a free kick from midfield earned by Carly.

Kate made another save for a corner in the 72nd minute before their free kick in our third. They sent a shot high before Nicole’s excellent shot hit the crossbar and another of her’s went wide.

Kalyn had a shot blocked and Maddie had a shot saved in the 79th minute, and just when we might have thought that time would be up UVM snuck a final shot into the lower right corner of our net to give them the same goal-advantage that UMass A has - their team erupted in joy about their chances for making Regionals.

We had good chances and made many good passes, so we look forward to playing them again in two weeks in Hanover!

at Middlebury 12Oct2024

Peak colors over Rochester Gap, elevation 2200’, blue skies and 60F/15C with fiercely gusty winds, we were pleased to be back at Middlebury. Kalyn’s grandparents and Hattie’s mom were there!

Kate graciously filled in goal for Addie and made a save from Middlebury’s corner kick in the 8th minute before Abby B had a shot saved. Kalyn had a shot go wide before Kate made a critical save on the goal line in the 17th minute.

Carly took a free kick from our third before Hattie earned and took a corner kick and Julia had a shot saved. Kate made another save for a corner in the 24th minute, and 9 minutes later Katelyn had a shot go over their crossbar.

Dani used her amazing speed to shut down an attack for Middlebury corner just before the break.

We had lots a ideas: attack altogether, connect more of our passes, switch the attack, pass to feet, release the ball more quickly in the midfield, mark better, make better passes to keep possession.

Abby B got off a good shot that barely went wide just before Kate made another save and Nathalie also had a shot go wide. Kate made another save and Erika had a long-distance shot saved before Abby B’s free kick in their third.

Nicole, having had a hand injury bandaged at DH before coming to the game, used her incredible speed to beat Middlebury to their end line and got off a cross for Colleen B to tap into the Middlebury goal.

Katelyn had shot saved before Carly earned a corner beautifully taken by Hattie. Then Katelyn repeated that experience before Abby B earned a free kick in their third and Lizzy had a shot saved.

Kalyn zoomed past her Middlebury defenders and set up Nathalie for our second goal in the 66th minute. Carly had a shot go over their crossbar and took a corner kick before Nicole earned and took a corner kick. Erika had a shot saved before Carly earned a corner taken by Dani.

We hope Middlebury will decide to come south to play again this fall!
