at UVM 13Oct2024

We had planned to play UVM on Oct 19, expecting that our League games would need to have been played two weeks before Nov2 Regionals - that way, we would have had one game per weekend. But the League changed the timeframe so that all of our games had to be played *three* weeks before Regionals. We had no choice but to squeeze two away games into the last weekend.

So we expected to have trouble with attendance with back-to-back away games so far into the term when academic work is heavy. We were actually fortunate to have enough players - with one sub - to play and not forfeit, which can lead to being ejected from the League. 

Leaving Hanover at 9:30 in 40F/5C weather, by noon it was maybe 50F/10C and cloudy but not windy. The grass field was narrow and bumpy - not very well covered - almost the opposite of Sachem. They insisted on 40-minute halves in hopes of gaining a better goals-scored record than UMass A, with whom they expected to have the same 6W-0L-1T record with a win over us today.

Nicole got us off to a great start with a shot that went wide. UVM sent in a lofting shot from maybe 20m that just dipped under our crossbar in the 8th minute. Kate made a save right after that before Kalyn had a shot go wide and Kya’s pressure on them made their shot go wide in the 16th minute.

Mia earned a corner in the 19th minute before Caitlin earned and took a corner four minutes later and Kalyn had a shot blocked. UVM’s shot was blocked for a corner and had two shots go wide before they sent in a shot lower right that Kate dove the right direction for but couldn’t reach.

Nicole had a shot go wide in the 33rd minute before Kate made another save and UVM had another shot go wide. Kate made another save just before the break.

Our discussion included a reference to basketball, our solid defense, their kick-and-run tactics, how we could move the ball more quickly, that aerial battles were rough, we could shoot more from a farther distance, double up more in the midfield and make the shorter/easier passes to keep possession.

Caitlin almost scored in the first minute of the second half before Kate made two more saves resulting in their corner kick. Kalyn earned a free kick in our third taken by Carly.

Mia’s powerful shot in the 47th minute rattled off the crossbar before UVM’s free kick from midfield. Kate made another save and UVM took another corner before they scored their third goal in the 52nd minute.

Nicole had a shot go wide before Kate made two more saves and they had a shot go over our crossbar. Carly earned and took a corner in the 68th before Colleen C had a shot saved and took a free kick from midfield earned by Carly.

Kate made another save for a corner in the 72nd minute before their free kick in our third. They sent a shot high before Nicole’s excellent shot hit the crossbar and another of her’s went wide. 

Kalyn had a shot blocked and Maddie had a shot saved in the 79th minute, and just when we might have thought that time would be up UVM snuck a final shot into the lower right corner of our net to give them the same goal-advantage that UMass A has - their team erupted in joy about their chances for making Regionals.

We had good chances and made many good passes, so we look forward to playing them again in two weeks in Hanover!

at Middlebury 12Oct2024

Peak colors over Rochester Gap, elevation 2200’, blue skies and 60F/15C with fiercely gusty winds, we were pleased to be back at Middlebury. Kalyn’s grandparents and Hattie’s mom were there!

Kate graciously filled in goal for Addie and made a save from Middlebury’s corner kick in the 8th minute before Abby B had a shot saved. Kalyn had a shot go wide before Kate made a critical save on the goal line in the 17th minute.

Carly took a free kick from our third before Hattie earned and took a corner kick and Julia had a shot saved. Kate made another save for a corner in the 24th minute, and 9 minutes later Katelyn had a shot go over their crossbar.

Dani used her amazing speed to shut down an attack for Middlebury corner just before the break.

We had lots a ideas: attack altogether, connect more of our passes, switch the attack, pass to feet, release the ball more quickly in the midfield, mark better, make better passes to keep possession.

Abby B got off a good shot that barely went wide just before Kate made another save and Nathalie also had a shot go wide. Kate made another save and Erika had a long-distance shot saved before Abby B’s free kick in their third.

Nicole, having had a hand injury bandaged at DH before coming to the game, used her incredible speed to beat Middlebury to their end line and got off a cross for Colleen B to tap into the Middlebury goal.

Katelyn had shot saved before Carly earned a corner beautifully taken by Hattie. Then Katelyn repeated that experience before Abby B earned a free kick in their third and Lizzy had a shot saved.

Kalyn zoomed past her Middlebury defenders and set up Nathalie for our second goal in the 66th minute. Carly had a shot go over their crossbar and took a corner kick before Nicole earned and took a corner kick. Erika had a shot saved before Carly earned a corner taken by Dani.

We hope Middlebury will decide to come south to play again this fall!

Springfield 6Oct2024

We had a memorable visit to Springfield last fall when we requested an earlier game time and shorter halves because of inclement weather was expected - the wind knocked over the sideline seating shelter that Chloe and I were sitting in just after we moved away!

Today with blue sky and 70F/20+C temperatures, we were delighted to play them on grass rather than artificial turf! Erika’s (and other?) parents were here!

Springfield got off the first shot, which went wide, before Chloe made a beautiful cross that was cleared for a corner taken by Lizzy. Colleen B and Caitlin had shots go wide before Erika’s shot that went over their cross-bar in the 11th minute.

Addie adeptly saved a Springfield shot in the 13th minute before they took a corner kick from which their shot was blocked. Katelyn’s shot was blocked for a corner taken by Nicole, who had her shot saved soon after. 

Hattie had a shot saved and one go wide before Liv’s shot was saved in the 27th minute. Addie saved Springfield’s free kick from midfield as well as another shot they took soon after that.

Nathalie used her immense speed and dribbling abilities to beat three defenders and get off a shot in the 32nd minute that went wide. Then Maddie earned a free kick in their third that Carly took, but her shot went high.

Maddie had a shot go wide before Lizzy earned a free kick in midfield in the 39th minute and had a shot blocked. Katelyn earned a free kick from their 18-yard line in the 40th minute that was taken by Carly.

During the break, suggestions included taking more shots, cutting the ball back when we reach the end line and expanding upon our attack. We applauded the good crosses and passing.

Hattie got off the first shot in the second half before Springfield had a shot go high. Katelyn had a shot saved for a corner and another shot go wide before she slotted a shot into the upper left side of their goal for our first goal in the 47th minute.

Liv’s shot almost snuck under their crossbar before Carly set up Hattie’s shot into the lower-left side of their net in the 50th minute. Springfield had free kicks in our third and theirs before Abby R earned us a free kick from midfield that Erika took; Chloe took the ensuing corner kick.

Lizzy had two shots and Nathalie one shot blocked, resulting in a corner, before Abby R earned another free kick in midfield taken by Erika. Springfield had a corner and free kick from midfield before Hattie’s shot that went wide in the 67th minute.

Nathalie’s excellent cross set up Hattie for her second goal in the 69th minute. Caitlin and Hattie had shots go wide before Lizzy, Caitlin and Hattie had shots saved in the 74th minute. 

Lizzy took another corner kick and had a shot go wide before Colleen B and Caitlin had shots blocked. Colleen had a shot go high in the 82nd minute.

at UMass A 05Oct2024

UMass A is always formidable - especially at home on their turf field, which is a much faster and physically abrasive surface than grass. We had only two substitutes to their dozen, and the weather felt more like summer than October, so we knew it would be difficult! 

Mia’s parents were there, and Nicole’s mom came with fruit!

UMass came out with great energy and got off the first shot in the 5th minute that Addie saved. Nicole almost got us on the scoreboard a minute later but her shot went wide.

UMass broke free and slotted the ball into the lower right corner of our goal in the 12th minute, following that with a shot Addie saved, a free kick from midfield and a second goal in the 22nd minute similar to the first.

After their corner, Addie made another save in the 28th minute before their free kick in our third of the field. Addie came up with another save a minute later, and another shot of theirs went high before another free kick in our third.

Addie made yet another save in the 33rd minute before Nicole earned and took a free kick in their third a minute later. UMass used their immense speed to get in behind our defense for their third goal slotted lower left.

Katelyn earned a free kick in their third that Nicole took just before the break, during which we spoke about how we showed good energy and made some good passes. We suggested getting more passes connected through the midfield, calling for the ball, pinching in on defense, looking for another quick transition like the one that broke Nicole loose in the 6th minute, running at them, communicating more, and using give-and-go passes.

After UMass took a free kick in our third, Mia had a shot saved and Chloe got a free kick after a UMass handball. Nicole and Katelyn had excellent shots saved in the 48th minute, and Nicole had a shot blocked for a corner taken by Hattie.

Hattie earned and took a corner kick after UMass had one just before Addie came out to prevent a UMass shot but had to face a UMass penalty kick in the 58th minute; she correctly guessed the right direction to dive!

Carly made a clearance for a UMass corner just before Nicole’s shot was barely wide in the 62nd minute. She had another shot saved just after that, and Dani had one go wide. After Carly’s free kick, UMass had a shot go wide before Katelyn earned a free kick from midfield taken by Chloe.

Nicole had two more shots go wide after a UMass free kick in our third. We had such a strong second half, bringing our shots about even with theirs! Credit to Addie’s five saves, equally their five saves!
