UMass A is always formidable - especially at home on their turf field, which is a much faster and physically abrasive surface than grass. We had only two substitutes to their dozen, and the weather felt more like summer than October, so we knew it would be difficult! 

Mia’s parents were there, and Nicole’s mom came with fruit!

UMass came out with great energy and got off the first shot in the 5th minute that Addie saved. Nicole almost got us on the scoreboard a minute later but her shot went wide.

UMass broke free and slotted the ball into the lower right corner of our goal in the 12th minute, following that with a shot Addie saved, a free kick from midfield and a second goal in the 22nd minute similar to the first.

After their corner, Addie made another save in the 28th minute before their free kick in our third of the field. Addie came up with another save a minute later, and another shot of theirs went high before another free kick in our third.

Addie made yet another save in the 33rd minute before Nicole earned and took a free kick in their third a minute later. UMass used their immense speed to get in behind our defense for their third goal slotted lower left.

Katelyn earned a free kick in their third that Nicole took just before the break, during which we spoke about how we showed good energy and made some good passes. We suggested getting more passes connected through the midfield, calling for the ball, pinching in on defense, looking for another quick transition like the one that broke Nicole loose in the 6th minute, running at them, communicating more, and using give-and-go passes.

After UMass took a free kick in our third, Mia had a shot saved and Chloe got a free kick after a UMass handball. Nicole and Katelyn had excellent shots saved in the 48th minute, and Nicole had a shot blocked for a corner taken by Hattie.

Hattie earned and took a corner kick after UMass had one just before Addie came out to prevent a UMass shot but had to face a UMass penalty kick in the 58th minute; she correctly guessed the right direction to dive!

Carly made a clearance for a UMass corner just before Nicole’s shot was barely wide in the 62nd minute. She had another shot saved just after that, and Dani had one go wide. After Carly’s free kick, UMass had a shot go wide before Katelyn earned a free kick from midfield taken by Chloe.

Nicole had two more shots go wide after a UMass free kick in our third. We had such a strong second half, bringing our shots about even with theirs! Credit to Addie’s five saves, equally their five saves!
