at MIT 14Oct2023

Having played all of our League division (New England West) games, we were fortunate to find a team to play for this weekend before Homecoming. MIT hosted us last spring on gras and again this fall on turf. Maddie’s and Chloe’s families were there as well as friends of Avery and Nathalie. The earliest they could arrange was 4:30pm, but our intrepid band of 14 players was ok with that.

Under cloudy skies and ~60F/15C, it was good weather for us. We had some traffic coming down, so our warm-up was short, but were just happy to play! They offered 35-minute halves - smart since we had few subs.

Both teams were very energetic and provided high pressure to win back the ball, but our passing was better, and more of the play was in their half. In the 11th minute Genevieve had a shot saved before Eliza earned and took a corner kick.

Nicole had two good shots saved before Liv earned and took a corner kick in the 28th minute, followed by Maddie’s shot saved.

Addie came up with a big save just before the break. At that point we had 4 shots to their 1.

Hattie had early 2nd-half shots shot wide and saved before Nathalie earned and took a corner kick in the 44th minute.

Chloe’s perfect pass set up Maddie’s high-arching shot that sailed over their GK for our goal in the 48th minute. MIT countered only a few minutes later with a shot from the right side into the upper left corner of our net to equalize.

Eliza had a shot go high before Addie came up with another big save in the 59th minute. A few minutes later they slotted a low shot into right corner of our net. They had a couple fast strikers who had good shots!

Addie made her third save in the 64th for a corner before Kelly got fouled in our third - free kick. She was ok but cleated on the side of her knee - lucky no ligament damage!

Caitlin earned and took a corner kick in the 68th before Liv had a shot go wide.

Given all of the recent research finding more injuries on turf fields than grass, we were relieved not to have any big difficulties, and MIT - who seemed better than ever (3rd in their division) - were a good host even if they were more physical than in the past. Even though we out-shot them 9:5 and more of the play was in their half, they did well to win.

Soon we find out whether we have an invitation to Regionals at Stoney Brook on Long Island!
