UMass B 29sep2018

Fabulously crisp morning air became warm and sunny 20+C/70+F with lots of fans! Lizzie's folks, Chris and Andi, brought oranges and Cate's folks, Marcie and Kacy, brought apples; Callie's folks, Heather and Jared brought their camera and and adorable puppy and took great photos; Julia Fissore O'Leary's dad came from Amherst bringing praise for the team after the game; Annie Saunders '12 and her friend Michael Hammer in town for a wedding later came from Seattle!!

We spoke about being quick and diagonal -- diagonal runs, passes or dribbles -- and not holding onto the ball since UMass would put us under great pressure.

There are two UMass teams -- this one called 'B' was strong last year, and we face 'A' next Sunday.

We came out strong, connecting many passes and being more diagonal than in past games. We were quick to win the ball back when we lost it, and we had a majority of the possession with more time in their third than they in ours.

In the 7th minute, Izzy took a free kick, and Callie followed with two more -- one a chance at goal with her shot going just over the cross-bar. Sophia had a shot go over as well before Julia Fissore O'Leary earned a free kick taken by Katie B in the 19th minute.

UMass got a free kick in the 21st minute, then Callie got two more free kick opportunities with the 2nd again just over the cross-bar. UMass got two more free kicks before Dani's shot on target was blocked in the 35th minute. Then UMass had their first shot go over our cross-bar and got another free kick.

In the 39th minute, Jenny got off a perfect cross for Dani to receive, but her shot on target was saved by the UMass goalkeeper. Just before the break, Izzy got off a free kick from which Nam got off a shot on target that was saved.

During the break we spoke about continuing the good passing to create scoring chances, crashing their net after our shots, saying the name of the player to whom we are passing the ball, using the sides of the field more, taking our free kicks quicker and giving our passes a little more force (given the abundant grass that slows down the ball).

We looked very bright -- Namya had a shot saved, Jordan had a shot go wide, Sarah J had a shot saved and Meredith had a shot go wide. Nine minutes later, Namya had her shot hit the upright.

UMass finally got a shot off in the 65th minute that Bri saved. Sophia had a shot go over their cross-bar and Jordan took a corner kick before Jenny's powerful shot off their cross-bar in the 72nd minute found Namya, who put the rebound into the UMass net for the only goal of the game.

After that, Sarah J had two shots saved, Caroline and Callie (free kick) had shots go over the cross-bar and Jenny another of her shots saved.

We withstood the high pressure and physicality UMass threw at us and felt great about our playing style -- looking good for our fans and sad only about our two ACL-injured players, Carly and Cate, who were both there to cheer on their team.

Amherst 23sep2018

After a quick water/food break, while Merrimack played Amherst, we returned to Sachem to play Amherst. They only had 9 players (we only had 12!), so we offered to play 8v8,  shorten the halves to 25 minutes and shorten the field by placing the goals on the 18 yd lines. We had been worried about playing three games in one weekend, but at this point in time it seemed ok.

Amherst got off a shot right away, but we immediately responded with shots from Meredith and Jenny, who took two corner kicks before she set up Lizzy for a tap-in goal in the 5th minute.

Sophia had shots saved and go over the cross-bar, Nam and Lizzie each had two shots saved, and Meredith S had a shot saved before Julia FO'L earned a free kick in the 16th minute.

Jenny set up Nam for her shot into the left side of the Amherst net, and Caroline
had a shot go wide before she took the ball all the way to the Amherst end line and crossed it to set up Lizzie in the 20th minute for our third goal.

Bri saved a shot from Amherst just before Jenny set up Nam for a goal in 22nd minute, and Nam's powerful shot in the 24th minute bounced off one of the Amherst players for our 5th goal just before the break.

We spoke about playing with more intensity and making crisper passes -- not flat, weak "hospital passes" (Julia FO'L's term). In the 2nd half we reduced our number of field players to six in order to match Amherst's numbers.

Katie B had a shot saved for a corner in the 27th minute, then Izzy made a pass to Lizzie who one-touch passed to Jenny for a tap-in. Jenny earned a free kick and Lizzie had a shot go wide just before Nam scored a close range in the 32nd minute.

Sophia had a shot saved just before Nam set up Caroline for our 8th goal in the 35th minute. Then Katie B had a shot saved and Sophia had a shot go wide before Nam sent in a rocketed shot from about 20 yd for our 9th goal (her 5th goal!).

After Caroline had a shot saved, she scored with a low shot on the left side of the Amherst net. Nam and Jenny had shots saved before Meredith S set up Lizzie for her 3rd goal.

Credit to Amherst for coming and playing with a reduced squad! They played hard the entire 50 minutes and had a great attitude about the game. Everyone had a smile on her face from a great day of soccer!

Merrimack 23sep2018

Glorious sun from clear skies with temperatures approaching 20C/~70F awaited us at Sachem for our first time playing Merrimack (near Andover, MA). We had arranged also for Amherst to play Merrimack and us afterward, so we agreed on 30-minute halves -- a good idea given the warmth of direct sun.

Fans came! Lizzie's folks, Andi and Chris, with Kirsten Teevens, Sophia's folks, maybe others? Lizzie's mom brought amazing pumpkin/chocolate muffins and apples - THANKS!

We spoke about quick, high-quality passes as a key for not getting over-exerted in the heat and length of two games.

Merrimack was quick to get off a shot in the first minute that Bri saved. After that, we controlled pretty much the entire game. Sarah J's shot was saved in the 4th minute, and Sophia's hit the cross-bar just after that.

In the 8th minute, Meredith S set up Sarah J, whose shot bounced off the keeper's hands and the upper-right corner before landing in the Merrimack goal. In the next minute, Lizzie's header was saved, and - another minute later - Jenny's corner kick was caught by the Merrimack GK.

After a fairly long period of possession from good passes, Nam had her shot saved in the 18th minute. Then Julia FO'L earned a free kick from her fierce dribbling at pace through the Merrimack midfield. Near the end of the half Jenny and Caroline had shots go over the cross-bar.

At the break we discussed switching the ball to the opposite side, better communication, sending the ball back when it looks crowded ahead and taking more shots.

After five minutes, Sarah J set up Dani for her low shot from the right into the left side of the Merrimack goal. Callie had a free kick, Sarah J had one shot go wide and one saved, Lizzie had two shots saved, Nam sent a shot over, Dani had a shot wide, Caroline and Nam had shot saved -- we kept the Merrimack GK very busy!

We might have been a little nervous about missing six players due to injuries and illness, but it didn't show. We played the way we had wanted to play -- with good possession due to an abundance of good passes.

WPI 22sep2018

Mostly cloudy mid-teen's C/60sF - perfect soccer weather - this was WPI's second visit to Hanover. We hosted them three years ago (8:0), visited them two years ago (4:2) and they didn't have enough players to come here last fall. We noticed that they had three wins already this season, so we expected them to be good!

Julia's parents were there, and Lindsey's folks kindly transported Jenny and Namya from special Saturday classes!

Just before the game, we spoke about making quicker passes -- in case they put high pressure on us. The captains decided on 35-minute halves -- smart in light of our having three games this weekend, and one of the refs needed to get to another game after ours.

Caroline earned us a corner kick in the 1st minute, but WPI came back quickly earning two corners of their own, one cleared by Meredith Gurnee.

We had a spell of success in the WPI third of the field. Lizzie got off a shot in the 6th minute that went wide just before Meredith G's on-target shot was blocked for a corner taken by Meredith S. Meredith G had her shot go wide a few minutes later.

Carly's corner in the 16th minute found Lizzie, whose shot was saved. Then Sophia had a shot go just high of the cross-bar, Meredith G had a shot go wide and Carly's shot went over the cross-bar.

Sophia broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a stunningly accurate and beautiful goal from the right side of the field into the upper left side-netting of the WPI goal. Their goalkeeper, who had done so well before that, couldn't do anything about Sophia's powerful shot.

After that, WPI seemed to come alive when they earned a free kick for an infraction in our third of the field in the 28th minute and snuck the ball into the left side of our net to even the score. Only a minute later they earned another free kick taken from the right side of the field and beating us at the near post to give them a go-ahead goal.

We responded with great energy and better possession. In the 32nd minute, Carly put the ball into the WPI net from about 25 yd on the right side of the field for the equalizer. Dani and Meredith G had shots saved and Carly earned us a corner kick just before the break.

We spoke during half-time about being quicker with our passes and more diagonal (switching across the field), better communication and using the sides more instead of route-one soccer (down the middle of the field). We also sensed that our give-and-go passes disrupted their composure.

Meredith G took the game into her own hands in the opening seconds of the 2nd half by dribbling by about a half-dozen defenders and sending a pin-point accurate shot into the left side of their net for the game-winning goal.

After Izzy took a free kick in the 38th minute, Bri saved a WPI shot. Dani and Carly both had shots saved around the time that WPI got a couple free kicks.

Meredith G earned and took a free kick in the 55th minute that was on target but saved for a corner taken by Lizzie. Callie's corner was saved a few minutes later, and immediately after that Meredith G dribbled past a bunch of WPI defenders before unselfishly passing the ball to Lizzie, who put the ball in to the net but was ruled offside.

Meredith G earned and took another free kick a minute later, but it was saved. WPI got a shot off right after that but it went wide.

Namya had a shot saved before WPI got a burst of energy and sent a powerful shot at Bri who saved it just in front of our goal two minutes from time.

WPI got off one more shot (wide) and Meredith S had a shot saved in the last minute of the game.

Their coach told me that they had just come off an away-win over UVM, so our win today had some added significance in light of UVM's great win record over the years. But our win was sweet and sour at the same time because Carly, Cate and Meredith G all suffered injuries from which we will hope for speedy recoveries.

Holy Cross 16sep2018

Very warm 30C/86F and sunny with almost no breeze, we hosted Holy Cross for the first time after visiting them last fall. They had only a couple subs but did well to survive the heat! We had some fans, including Bri's wife Alice and Lizzie's folks! Callie went to get more water -- thanks! Lindsey, still in rehab for her ACL, took photos of the team during the game!

All five new players from the Class of 2022 -- Carly Brown, Caroline Collins-Pisano, Sophia Greszczuk, Katie Reisman and Cate Rozelle -- were with us, so with 12 returning players we had 17. Grad student addition, Jordan Fredricksen Isaacs, had a conflict but will join us in the future.

We spoke about making good passes and moving the ball quickly in order to make efficient use of our energy on such a hot day. The captains had decided, smartly, to play 30-minute halves.

We didn't waste any time getting off shots! Meredith S got off her first shot after only a couple minutes, and Namya curled the ball into the upper right corner for our first goal in the 4th minute.

After Jenny's shot was saved, Tina earned a corner in the 8th minute. With long grass and hot sun, it was very exhausting for either team to connect passes, especially long-distance passes. But we maintained most of the possession and were in their third of the field more than they were in our third.

Caroline, subbing in for Jenny at left mid, got off her first shot with our team in the 16th minute -- only about 5 minutes after stepping onto the field. The other 22's added great skill, strength and energy, with Sophia in the middle, Carly up top, and Cate and Katie R on outside back. It looked as if the 22s had been playing with our team for months already!

Holy Cross made an effective attack and their corner kick in the 20th minute required Bri's help with a save. Only a minute later, Carly got a breakaway and easily accelerated past her defender but had her shot saved.

A minute later, Dani's shot was saved. In the 26th minute, Carly's shot was saved but Caroline picked off the rebound and put it into the right side of the Holy Cross goal.

Just before the half, Meredith G dribbled through several defenders and set up Sarah J (SJ) for our 3rd goal. Immediately after that, Meredith S had two shots saved.

During the half-time break we discussed more diagonal passes to feet, switching the attack to the opposite side, more communication and making our passes sooner. It was great that Callie brought more water and that there was some shade beside the field!

After Holy Cross earned a corner, Lizzie made a cross to the far post that Jenny almost scored with a header, but it went wide. In the 35th minute, Meredith G had her shot saved. Soon after that, Meredith G got her head on Jenny's free kick, but the ball went just wide.

In the 39th minute, Dani set up Caroline for our 4th goal, then, two minutes later, Carly did the same for Caroline for our 5th goal. Carly had her shot go over the cross bar a couple minutes later, and Meredith G's free kick was saved.

Carly earned us corner in the 46th minute (taken by SJ), Cate's shot two minutes later went just a little high, then Jenny had two shots go over the Holy Cross cross bar.

In the 53rd minute, SJ's shot was saved, then, only a minute later, Meredith G made a long dribble past multiple defenders before she slotted the ball into the Holy Cross net for our 6th goal.

Lizzie had a shot go over the cross-bar before SJ and Meredith S's shots were saved. In the last minute of play, Namya's shot was blocked for a corner kick. Meredith S's corner kick found Meredith G, whose header went over the cross-bar.

Surprisingly, some of our players said they got accustomed to the heat and felt better as the game progressed, but it was smart to have limited the game to two 30-minute halves!
