at Northeastern 21oct2018

We saw snow flakes just before leaving campus for Boston, but for our first time at Northeastern's (new turf) field we had blustery but sunny 40F/5C. They were 2nd in their division -- just as we were -- and got an at-large bid to Regionals, so this was their tune-up game for their trip to Delaware next weekend.

So many fans! ELEVEN parents! Julia's dad, Lizzie's folks and friend, Callie's folks, Izzy's, Sophia's and Caroline's (and her twin sister from Wesleyan Univ), Tina's sister, Bri's friend from the Navy -- perhaps more? And great treats, especially in recognition of Katie Bernardez's birthday!

We spoke about making ground passes in light of the huge gusts of wind and being quick to move the ball since we expected high pressure from Northeastern. We didn't know how long the halves would be, but in now in retrospect I wish we had played 35-minute halves (we'd have had a tie!).

Our hosts got off shots wide and over the cross bar in the 4th and 5th minutes, then Sophia had a shot go wide. Neither team could keep much possession due to the extremely high pressure both teams put on each others. Northeastern did a good job of stepping in to intercept many of our passes, but we worked hard to get the ball back each time.

In the next span of only 3 minutes, Bri made 3 saves and Julia blocked one of their shots for a corner. Then Dani got off a shot that was saved.

There was a great deal of grabbing and pushing by our hosts that we imagine the officials either didn't see or thought was ok!

Northeastern had a shot hit our upright in the 14th minute, and another shot right after that go over our cross bar.

After twelve minutes, Bri saved a Northeastern shot for a corner. They scored by getting to the ball in the midst of a very crowded goal mouth.

After their free kick and another corner kick, Caroline showed her immense speed and skill to get in behind their defense for a shot that was saved. They had another shot blocked and a free kick saved by Bri just before the break.

During the break we tried to stay warm, recommending shorter (ground) passes in order to keep better possession and more communication so we know what pressure is on us and what options we have for passes.

Northeastern wasted no time getting two more shots off that were saved by Bri. Izzy almost got us on the score board in the 44th minute with a powerful shot just wide. Northeastern had another shot hit our upright followed by another one Bri saved.

Namya earned us a free kick in the 47th minute (taken by Callie), then Dani had a shot on target saved. Then Northeastern had another corner, Bri saved a follow-up shot and they sent another shot wide.

Namya sent a perfect cross from the right side of the field to set up Sarah J's tap-in equalizing goal in the 56th minute. It was great to see our hard work and quality be rewarded. Northeastern was showing great energy and perhaps too much physicality, but our skill and good passing showed them we were still in the game.

Bri came out bravely in the 61st minute to squash a ball at the feet of a Northeastern attacker. Then Caroline earned a free kick on the left side of the field that was taken by Callie.

Northeastern showed their persistence and high energy by getting the ball to an unmarked forward who put the ball into the middle of our net for their second goal in the 71st minute (see why I wanted 35-minute halves?!). After a shot Bri saved, they got very little power on a rolling ball that was able to find the left floor of our net to put them up two on us.

Namya almost scored in the 77th minute with a shot that surely had beaten their keeper but barely went over their cross bar. Northeastern had the last shot of the game go wide.

It's good to play good teams, and much credit goes to Northeastern for their intensity and quickness. We will want more chances to play them -- preferably on real grass and not in such crazy wind!

UVM 13oct2018

Our last league game this fall, we usually brace ourselves for a game with UVM due to their strength and physically challenging playing style. Under overcast, drizzly skies and cool temperatures around 8C/46F

We were delighted to have so many fans! Cate Rozelle and her mom (just a little more than a week after Cate's ACL surgery), Carly, Lindsey, Meredith Srour's mom from Maryland, Tina's mom from Virginia, Lizzie's folks, Callie's folks, Julia Fissore-O'Leary's dad and Sophia's folks and pup from Massachusetts and Katie Reisman's folks from Scarsdale!

We spoke about being quick to move the ball -- expecting high pressure from UVM.

After Callie's free kick, UVM showed their energy and good passing by getting close to our goal with a shot that went wide. Tina earned a free kick that Callie took in the 9th minute, then Bri came up with two big saves before and after two UVM shots over our cross bar.

Katie Reisman was in the right place at the right time to receive Katie Bernardez's free kick in the 19th minute and get off a shot that went wide.

Bri came up with another save in the 23rd minute just before Sarah J earned a free kick taken by Tina and Nam earned a corner taken by Jenny in the 32nd minute.

On a quick counter-attack immediately after that, a UVM wing player sent a powerful shot from the right side into the left side-netting of our goal. After Lizzie's corner in the 35th minute, Bri saved another shot just before the break.

We spoke over half-time about matching UVM's intensity, having better communication and connecting more of our passes.

UVM got into our third right away, but Tina shut down their attack, earning a free kick in the 41st minute. After UVM's free kick from 25 yd, Bri saved three shots in three minutes! They had another free kick go out for a corner before they sent a shot wide and earned another corner.

Dani turned on her jets in the 60th minute, buzzing by several UVM defenders before she shot a left-curling shot that looked like it certainly would go into the upper right corner of the UVM net, but their keeper got her finger tips to it for the save.

Three minutes later, after UVM's free kick from mid-field, Meredith G showed her dazzling dribbling skills in blowing by several defenders before sending a powerful shot just wide of the UVM goal. It looked like we were on a tear and might even the score.

After Julia Fissore-O'Leary earned a free kick taken by Katie Bernardez in the 64th minute, UVM sent a powerful shot that hit the upright then was headed back across the mouth of the goal when Bri was able to wrest control of it.

Meredith G again showed her energy by dribbling at UVM, earning us a free kick in the 69th minute when UVM fouled her. Immediately after that, Namya also turned on after-burners to beat several UVM defenders, getting close to their goal and getting a shot on target that was saved.

UVM got off another shot in the 71st minute but it went over our goal's cross bar. Then Namya sped by and got in behind the UVM defense, putting another great show on target that was saved. She had another shot in the 75th minute that went wide.

We got a free kick minute later that found Namya, who was poised to get another scoring opportunity, but she was ruled offside. Katie Reisman beat a couple defenders and streamed down the left side, getting a cross off to Namya whose shot went barely over the UVM goal's cross bar.

Our surge of energy in the second half was impressive, and it seemed often that we would equalize. But that wasn't to be. We thanked UVM for coming and after some treats offered by Tina's and Meredith S's moms we got in our team photo since Cate and Carly (who suffered ACL tears last month) were both available.

Middlebury 10oct2018

Accommodating our preference not to play last Thursday due to class conflicts, Middlebury agreed to come today, even with only eight players! We moved the goals to the 18-yard lines and offered them whatever length halves they would like. The day was fall perfection -- sunny, warm but not hot!

It was great to have Carly and Lindsey there even though neither could play due to ACL tear/rehab. Our positive thoughts are still with Cate for her difficult recovery from last week's surgery.

We agreed on 30-minute halves and fielded a 3-3-1 formation, with suggestions to make good passes and practice speed dribbling.

Lizzie got off a shot on target right away that was saved. After Middlebury's corner kick, Meredith G had shots blocked and over the cross-bar, and Katie B got two corner kicks.

In the 6th minute, Namya set up Lizzie for our first goal. Only a minute later, Meredith G sent a low shot into the middle of the Middlebury goal.

Lizzie had a shot saved and one go over the cross-bar before Meredith G had a shot saved. Jenny had a shot go over the cross-bar, too, and Tina shut down one of the few Middlebury attacks into our third -- setting up her free kick after a foul was ruled.

In the 15th minute, Meredith G sent a shot from the left side of the field to the bottom right corner of the Middlebury net for our third goal. Immediately after that Middebury got off a shot that went wide, Sophia and Dani had shots go wide, but one on target from Dani was saved but bounced back out for Meredith S to put away.

Jordan had shots wide and saved before scoring in the 22nd minute. Then she had a shot hit the upright and a shot saved. Sophia had a shot go wide before Dani's shot low and in the middle found the back of the Middlebury goal for our 6th goal. Her shot after that sailed over the cross bar.

Bri made a save in the 27th minute just before Jordan scored again -- this time in the upper left corner of the Middlebury goal.

During the break we spoke about making more passes before scoring.

Middlebury came out with renewed energy and scored in the first minute of the second half and had two shots go wide.

Meredith G sent a shot into the lower left corner of their net to make it 8:1, then Namya had a shot saved for a corner -- taken by Lizzie.

In the 43rd minute from outside left back, Katie B made a shot into the right side netting of the Middlebury goal to make it 9:1. Lizzie's shot hit the upright and Dani's shot was saved before Caroline had a shot blocked and two go wide.

After Caroline's corner kick 6 minutes from time, Dani's low-middle shot made it 10:1. Middlebury countered with a shot over our cross-bar and one that Bri saved.

Credit to Middlebury to play with only 8 players! They enjoyed incredible scenery on their way to our campus -- over Middlebury and Rochester Gaps -- and everyone had a smile on her face after the game.

UMass A 7oct2018

We met the other UMass team ('A') under overcast skies and 15+C/60+F temperatures -- a tiny bit of drizzle and a fairly slick but not soggy surface.

Caroline's mother and brother came from Westwood MA, Callie's mom and sister from Newton MA and Izzy's folks and adorable puppy (Steve) from Sherborn MA! Carly (awaiting ACL surgery in November) and Lindsey (still in rehab for her repaired ACL) joined us, too. We had promised Cate Rozelle (ACL surgery only a few days ago and still in a lot of pain) that we would wait until next weekend to take our team photo so she could be included.

We spoke about moving the ball quickly so as not to be tackled/injured! Julia Fissore O'Leary added that we should be 100% committed to our tackles for the same reason.

Meredith was quick to get a scoring chance with a free kick on target saved in the 2nd minute. Callie got a free kick soon after, and Bri came up big by saving a UMass shot in the 6th minute.

We had most of the possession with crisp passes and good movement. We even had moments when Tina, Julia FO'L, Izzy, Callie and both Katies were able to join the attack by bringing the ball up the field.

Dani got off a shot that went wide in the 10th minute, then a UMass shot went over our cross bar -- luckily for us! They were dangerous with their speed when they got in behind us, which happened a few times.

Meredith G earned another free kick in the 15th minute that became a scoring opportunity, but the UMass gk made the save.

Namya had a great chance eight minutes later, but her shot was saved. Then Katie B took a free kick and UMass had a shot go over our cross bar before Sarah J's corner kick after 30 minutes.

Namya had another great scoring chance when her shot went just barely wide in the 31st minute, and immediately after that Julia Fissore O'Leary saved us by shutting down a threatening attack in front of our goal.

Namya had another great shot on target that bounced off a UMass defender for our corner kick taken by Meredith G, and Sarah J had her shot go wide just before the break after 40 minutes.

During half-time, we spoke about keeping up our great passing, putting earlier pressure on UMass when they have the ball, going all together when we have possession, combining more in wide areas and committing 100% to tackles we decide to make.

After Jordan earned us a corner kick, UMass had a shot go wide and their free kick saved by Bri. Meredith G's free kick in the 47th minute found Lizzie, whose shot was just over the cross bar.

Julia Fissore O'Leary came up big again in the 47th minute when she shut down a UMass attack that got in behind our last line of defense. Meredith S got a free kick after that, as did UMass, before Julia FO'L came up big again in the 61st minute by preventing another UMass scoring opportunity that resulted in a corner for UMass. UMass had a shot go wide immediately afterward.

Sophia sent a wonderful diagonal pass from her position in the middle of the field to the right side of the field for Jenny to run onto in the 63rd minute. Jenny's left-footed shot seemed to float over the UMass GK into the upper left corner of their net for our only goal of the game. It was a glorious goal!

Bri came up big again when she saved another UMass shot two minutes later and Callie took a free kick before UMass got lucky (or perhaps we were unlucky) to earn a penalty kick in the 67th minute that leveled the score.

After Callie took another free kick in the 72nd minute, Bri saved another UMass shot. We were lucky to have a UMass goal disallowed when the ball had traveled out of bounds -- the official in the middle of the field didn't see the lines-person's flag go up.

Since this was most assuredly our most challenging game this fall, we were delighted to out-play UMass 'A'! Although either team might have taken a win today, we were rewarded by our high quality to have a draw and remain undefeated -- a difficult achievement in our division!
