Brandeis Tournament 16apr2016

Perfect, clear 50F/10C soccer weather but very windy and a little chilly for our many spectators: Christine Kanoff (!), Lindsay's grandparents, Hannah's family and cute puppy, Izzy's folks, Christyn's folks, Caroline's parents, Lizzie's parents, maybe others?

The Brandeis tournament consists of 30-minute games with varsity teams and one club team, Azzurri, composed of former varsity players, so the games are always very energetic and a highlight of our spring season.

We arrived with just enough time to get in a quick jog and some passes before facing Babson at 11am.

Babson 0:0

Babson beat us last year, so we were psyched to be competitive with them this time. They looked threatening on the first corner kick and would have scored if not for Hannah's save in the 5th minute. Allison almost got us on the scoreboard right after that, but her shot was saved.

Babson's play was quick and direct, but we were up to the task and closed down most of their initiatives. They got off a couple shots that went wide and had one threatening free kick that Hannah saved.

Shots 1:4  Saves 2:1

5 Babson corner, Hannah save
8 Allison shot saved
13 Babson shot wide
28 Babson free kick, Hannah save
29 Babson shot wide

Emmanuel 2:0

We tied this team last year, so it was a testament about our team that we dominated them so easily this time! Sophie and Lindsey both got off shots that went wide, but Liz and Elise set up Christyn for her two goals. She almost got a 3rd goal before she came off so Haley could go on.

Shots 4:0  Saves 0:0

11 Sophie shot wide
15 Liz to Christyn --> 1:0
18 Elise corner Christyn scored --> 2:0
21 Lindsey shot wide

Azzurri 1:1

This club team always demonstrates great skill and are great to play! Izzy played with them before coming to Dartmouth, too, and on occasion I have seen players on their team that I coached when we lived in Needham, MA!

Sophie wasted no time in setting up Christyn for her goal in the first minute of play! It took Azzurri 20 minutes to respond with a well-placed shot in the left corner of our net. They had two corners before Hannah saved a shot 5 minutes before the end of the game.

Shots 1:3  Saves 1:0

1 Sophie to Christyn --> 1:0
16 Azzurri corner
20 Azzurri shot into the left corner --> 1:1
23 Azzurri corners (2)
25 Azzurri shot saved
26 Azzurri shot wide

Brandeis 0:1

Brandeis is always strong, so we were psyched to come so close to a 0:0 tie. We held them off with good passes and quick movement. They finally got off a shot that Laura saved in the 10th minute. Haley got off a shot in the 16th minute and Brandeis had a couple shots wide after that.

In a play that looked offside, Brandeis put a pass to their left wing who slotted her shot into the far side of our net only 3 minutes from time. We were psyched to be strong enough to hold them off so well.

Shots 1:5  Saves 1:0

10 Laura save
11 Brandeis corner
16 Haley shot wide
18 Brandeis shot wide
20 Brandeis shot wide
26 Brandeis shot hit the upright
27 Brandeis (offside?) shot to far post --> 0:1

at MIT 10apr2016

After a half-hour break following the game with BC, we faced our hosts, a new team to us. We were lucky MIT could host our games since BC was not able to gain access to a field!

We might have given MIT too much respect at first, and they sent a weak shot for Hannah to save in the 13th minute. After Lindsay hammered a shot wide in the 16th minute, MIT beat our back line by putting a shot into the right side of our net in the 20th minute.

We didn't panic, however, and our passing game improved immediately after that, leading to Callie's perfect pass to Mel, setting up our equalizer in the 27th minute.

Early in the 2nd half, Allison took the game into her own hands (feet?) and ran all the way to the MIT goal to give us the lead. In the 40th minute, Sarah made a great shot that hit the cross bar.

After Christyn's shot that went wide in the 41st minute, Sarah got another chance when our corner kick came right to her. After it bounced, she placed it perfectly into the MIT net to make the score 3:1.

Rose used her speed to break past the MIT defense, slotting her shot past their keeper into the left side of their net in the 47th minute.

It was a great way to spend a sunny but windy Sunday!

BC at MIT 10apr2016

Below freezing when we left campus, it was clear and windy 5C/40F in Cambridge for our two games with BC and MIT just off the beautiful Charles River.

Very impressive that we had a full roster of players up so early for a very long Sunday -- running two games in one day -- our first outdoors since October!

And so many FANS! Kate's mom, Christyn's parents and team alumna/sister Courtney '14, Lizzie's family, Callie's dad, Izzy's folks (her mom's birthday!), my daughter Lizzy '09 former player on our team now at BU Law School, maybe others?

BC was top of the eastern branch of our league two falls ago when we won the western branch, and we were lucky to beat them in a playoff game that gave us an automatic berth to Regionals. So we knew to expect stiff competition from them!

We spoke about making good passes quickly and keeping the ball on the turf (because of the wind). Both teams applied high pressure, demonstrating skillful passing but neither side maintaining long periods of possession. Hannah saved BC's first shot just before Christyn's two shots in the 4th and 8th minutes. Maria's shot went wide in the 15th minute.

In the 19th minute, BC got really lucky with a shot from something like 25 meters on the left side of the field, hitting the far (right) post and the left post before bouncing into our net. As announcers for many professional games say, "we didn't know much about it", meaning we couldn't do much about it!

Hannah saved another shot that BC got off near then end of the first half, and we earned a corner just before time.

In the 2nd half, BC got off only two shots, and most of the game was in there third, so we showed huge improvement from the first half. After BC's shot wide in the 36th minute, Christina made a perfectly placed cross that Lizzie reached but went just wide.

Right after that, Christyn got off a great pass to Lizzie that would have been a certain goal but hit the cross bar! Then Caroline's solid shot sailed over the net in the 42nd minute. We earned another corner before Hannah's save in the 58th minute. At the hour mark, Caroline got off two shots in a row that went wide.

Lizzie's corner kick found Rose, whose volley would certainly have been a goal if the BC keeper hadn't been positioned perfectly to save it. Christyn's shot near the end of game was solid but saved.

We beat them in the 2nd half, and our 10 shots to their 5 gave us the right feeling that we are actually probably the better team. Playing BC was a good choice since they are skillful and energetic!
