Tufts 31Oct2015

Starting out a cool 30F, the day brightened up quickly and felt warm in the bright sunlight. Tufts came last year, too -- a great team to play because of their high quality and energy. They asked for 40-minute halves.

Sarah Latulipe came from Washington, DC! Also: Caroline's dad, Christina's folks and energetic puppies all the way from Virginia, Callie's mom (who took more wonderful photos!), Mel's dad all the way from California!

We spoke about making the quick, easy passes -- keeping the ball moving, as we had at UVM.

Julia almost got us on the score sheet with her shot on target in the 3rd minute, and Tufts got their speedy forward in behind our defense for their goal in the 4th minute. Tufts put another shot over the cross bar right after that.

Caroline earned us a corner in the 6th minute and another corner followed the first one. Rose took our free kick in the 9th minute, and Lindsey almost scored on the rebound but her shot went into the side netting.

After we had another free kick in the 19th minute, Tufts got a shot on target that Hannah saved and one that went over the cross bar. In the 26th minute, Mel's shot was saved for a corner.

Maria made a brilliant clearance preventing Tufts from a goal for their corner in the 30th minute. Hannah caught their corner kick.

Tufts had three more shots, one on target that Hannah saved, before half time.

During the break we agreed that we were playing really well -- making good passes and changing the point of attack -- we just needed to be patient and keep believing in ourselves!

Hannah saved Tufts' shot in the 44th minute and their free kick in the 47th minute.

Immediately after that, Sophie earned a corner. Elise put a lofted ball into a perfect position in front of the Tufts net, there was some chaos followed by Lizzie getting her foot on the ball from close range for our equalizing goal!

Hannah saved two more of Tufts' three more shots before Caroline got off another shot on target in the 64th minute (saved). Sophie had her shot saved a minute later.

It was wonderful to see so many of our shots on target!

Hannah saved another Tufts shot in the 70th minute. Rose had her shot saved in the 78th minute, and Tufts put a shot wide in the 79th minute.

It felt like either team could have won, so a draw seemed like a great result. Both teams worked hard the whole game to win the ball, but our passing was better and we had more possession in their half. They had speed up top, but our defense learned quickly how to manage that. Hannah saved us so many times, so great credit to her!

Our defense showed great composure, able to pass out of the back without panicking, allowing us to keep possession. And our midfield did well to get the ball forward to create scoring opportunities -- witness our 9 shots!

It was a great way to cap the season, since we were not sure there will be another game this fall!

at UVM 24Oct2015

Having Saturday classes today precluded our trip to the Region 1 Regional Tournament in Delaware this weekend, but the team wisely decided to find another team to play, and UVM has always been a good choice -- so we were happy to travel to Burlington for a game after classes.

Windy! Overcast skies and almost 50F/10C. Joe Nolan came!

The teams decided on 30-minute halves, and there was no ref, so I stepped in to help -- good way to stay warm, too! Given the wind, we spoke about keeping our passes on the ground and making them as high-quality as possible in order to preserve our energy (since we had only 3 subs).

With only 14 players, we could have expected trouble with our game, but that couldn't have been farther from the truth! Our passing was like a clinic! Just as in practice last week, we made give-and-go diagonal passes and switched the attack from side to side -- giving UVM a great deal of trouble with our possession.

It's good to play good teams, and UVM hustled and played a good passing game themselves. They got off the first shot before Christyn and Haley got off three shots in three minutes!

Hannah came out with immense strength and speed to grab the ball off the feet of a UVM breakaway in the 6th minute, followed by Lindsey's shot in the 8th minute and Allison two shots before half time.

In the 2nd half, UVM got off three shots before Izzy, Maria, Allison, Lindsey and Haley made shots of their own. UVM had one more shot that went wide before time.

We were delighted to have played so well -- especially with only 3 subs! Playing on turf is always faster, so it was particularly impressive for our team to play so well at speed! So FIT!

And Joe Nolan was rewarded with a trip back to campus with Hannah!

at Harvard 17Oct2015

Leaving Hanover around noon with cloudy 40F weather featuring sparse showers, we arrived in Cambridge via Routes 3, 128 and Mass Pike around 2:30, missing the Head of the Charles traffic that Lizzie's dad Chris had alerted us to.

So many FANS! Molly Grimes '14, Mila Sheeline '14, Shelby Schrier '15 with Brett Teplitz '15, Christyn's sister Courtney Karol '13 and their parents, Lizzie's parents, Izzy's parents, Lindsay's grandparents Douglas and Ginger, Hannah's dad Joe (with the VW microbus!)

Windy with variable cloudiness, we spoke about keeping our passes on the ground, moving the ball quickly and diagonally, using the width of the field.

The field officials said the halves would be 40 minutes long, so we decided to maintain our more-frequent subbing every 10 minutes -- seemed to work well vs UVM last weekend.

Harvard was feisty as usual, putting great energy into their play and pressuring us as soon as we got the ball. They earned the first corner and Hannah saved the impending header from it.

In the 8th minute, Lindsey put a shot on target that was saved. Soon after that, Harvard put a shot wide before Allison got off a shot in the 25th minute. Then Harvard got off two shots that Hannah saved before their two corners near the end of the first half.

At half-time, we noticed that our passing had improved as the first half progressed, even though we found the midfield very congested and we had difficulty maintaining very much possession. We planned to keep up the good passes in the 2nd half!

Harvard got off the first shot in the 2nd half, followed by a corner and another shot that Hannah saved. We earned a corner kick in the 50th minute and shortly after that a free kick from about 30 meters -- Elise's kick was just a little high but really well struck!

Harvard put a shot wide in the 57th minute, and three minutes later Izzy got a shot in target that was saved. We had several chances to breakaway and get in behind the defense, thanks to really good distribution by Caroline, Lindsey and Liz. In one of those chances, Christyn got off a shot that went wide.

In the 71st minute, Maria hammered a shot from something like 30 meters that certainly would have beaten their keeper, but it sailed a little bit wide. Soon after that, Harvard good off their 8th shot of the game for Hannah's 5th save!

Hannah and our strong back line -- Kate, Lindsay, Mari, Elise, Christina, Callie -- made it impossible for Harvard to score, but Harvard put up a great effort. Our passing became better as the game progressed, so we had a lot to celebrate.

Writing this while seeing Chelsea-Aston Villa reminds me how hard you worked to get the ball back after losing it and how quick you were with your passes! REALLY important! Your work rate and selflessness were reminiscent of Summer Hammond!

It was a great game to watch -- very high energy and fast pace! Neither team could keep the ball very long, and both sides had chances to score. Lindsay's grandfather noted that she has never had a loss at Harvard!

UVM 10Oct2015

Crisp 45F air following the windy rainy bonfire last night, the morning started out overcast but turned sunny during the game!

So many FANS came! Christine Kanoff and Caroline Gellman came! Caroline's family, Callie's parents, Lizzie's parents and sister, Lindsay's parents and grandparents, Christyn's dad (maybe mom, too?), maybe others?

After our beating UVM last fall, we were expecting them to present the huge challenge they usually provide! Their coach's son was my son's coach at Green Mountain Valley School in 1998, so our team has a pretty friendly and respectful relationship with them.

Beforehand, we spoke about keeping the ball moving -- that the ball can move faster than the opposing team. And we took a moment to remember Summer Hammond '17 again, thanking Lindsay for getting her #23 stitched onto our jersey sleeves.

Both teams showed a great deal of energy and pressure to get possession, with neither team getting much time with the ball. After UVM got off a couple shots, Melanie put her shot wide in the 29th minute.

A minute later, Lindsey had her first shot saved but put in the rebound to get us on the scoreboard in the 30th minute. After Mel got off another shot that went wide, UVM sent a pass forward between our defense with (I thought) a player offsides and put the ball into the back of our net to even the score in the 37th minute.

UVM put two shots wide, and so did Liz, Callie and Lindsay before the half ended in the 47th minute (extra time added on for Hannah to put on shin guards -- awarded a yellow card for illegal equipment!).

At half time we spoke briefly about being more diagonal rather than sending the ball straight up the field.

UVM put a header over our net right away and then Hannah saved a shot from them before Sophie collected a poor distribution from their goalkeeper and sent a beautifully struck ball in the upper left corner of the UVM net for the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute.

Several minutes later UVM rattled our cross bar with a shot the easily could have been a goal. In the 67th minute, Christyn had her shot saved. Hannah made five more saves in the remainder of the half with Haley getting two shots off wide and shots from Caroline and Mel saved. Hannah's last save from a free kick that touched her fingertips before rattling off our cross bar gave us the win that we all felt we deserved.

Our passing and our speed of play improved as the game progressed, and we were pleased to look so good for all of our fans! The team would like to thank Lizzie's family for the smart new red adidas training bibs ("pinnies")!

at Yale 27sep2015

After a 10-minute break, we played Yale on their bumpy long grass. The parent scouting report was that Yale was quicker than Fairfield, so we spoke about keeping a high passing tempo.

After Sophie's shot over the bar, Yale got in behind us for a breakaway that parents though was offsides, but with only one ref it is very difficult to see offsides. Hannah did her best to come out and be as big as possible, but Yale slotted the shot in for their first goal.

After Christyn's shot was saved and a couple Dartmouth corner kicks, Lindsey got off a shot on target that was saved in the 19th minute. Immediately after that, Lindsey rattled the upright with another shot and Haley was in just the right spot to be able to put in the rebound to tie up the score.

Haley got off another shot in the 27th minute that went wide. Both teams were working very hard for possession! At half time we spoke about getting the ball to do more of the work by getting it moving quicker.

In the 1st minute of the 2nd half, Rose's shot hit the cross bar! About 10 minutes later she got off another shot that went wide; immediately after that when she took a corner kick, Caroline's shot was saved.

Yale got lucky in the 44th minute when we lost the ball and they were scrappy in front of our net. Lindsey's shot in the 48th minute was saved.

Their two goals did not reflect how well we played! We looked like the better team today, but they were lucky! Our control of the midfield, our solid back line and our much-improved passing made us look great. We had good chances, too, so we can't feel much defeat!

GREAT to see so many fans! Kate's mom, Christyn's parents, Caroline's family, Nat's parents, Julia's family, Callie's family, maybe others?! And such wonderful food! THANKS!

Fairfield at Yale 27sep2015

Leaving Hanover in brisk 40+F overcast weather, after a 3-hour trip down I-91 through some fog (I saw one deer by the side of the road!) the sun came out over Massachusetts. We arrived in New Haven in time to warm up for our first game with Fairfield at 11:15am. Yale played Fairfield beforehand.

So many fans! Kate's mom, Christyn's parents, Caroline's family, Nat's parents, Julia's family, Callie's family, maybe others?! Wonderful food (after the two games) from the parents and siblings!

Before the first 30-minute half we spoke about quicker passes.

Fairfield was eager to press, and they got off the first shot -- saved by Hannah in the 8th minute. Soon after, Christyn and Lindsey both put shots on Fairfield's net that were saved.

Fairfield put another shot for Hannah to save before Sophie had her shot saved in the 13th minute. In the 21st minute Haley set up Melanie for her beautiful shot into the upper left corner of the Fairfield net for our first goal.

After a Fairfield shot wide and Haley's shot over the bar, Liz put a shot wide before Elise took a free kick just before half time.

Early in the 2nd half, Christyn got off another shot that was saved before Hannah saved a shot from Fairfield in the 35th minute. Hannah immediately sent the ball long for Christyn, who promptly put the ball past the Fairfield goalkeeper for our 2nd goal!

Sophie had another shot saved and Christyn put a shot wide before Kate made a huge save off the line when Hannah came out to prevent a shot but the rebound came back at our net. Good save, Kate!

It was good for us to see huge improvement in our play during this game! Our passing was much better and more diagonal as the game progressed.

UMass 19sep2015

After a quick break for a bite to eat, we were back at Sachem for our 2nd game, with UMass, who are always competitive and were looking for redemption after losing to us last fall.

UMass came out very energetically, pressuring us quickly and showing a great deal of confidence in their play. It was difficult for either side to keep much possession.

The first recorded shot came in the 11th minute when Hannah saved their shot. Later, Maria earned us a free kick.

Hannah saved another shot in the 26th minute. In the last minute of the half after UMass pushed Liz Hyde to the ground and the players all thought there would be a whistle for a free kick, UMass put the ball into the upper left corner of our net even though Hannah was able to get a hand on it.

At half-time we spoke about getting the ball moving more quickly in order to combat the high UMass pressure.

After UMass put a shot over early in the 2nd half, Rose got off a good shot that was saved. A UMass player kicked our new goalkeeper Laura in the shin, so she needed to step off the field for ice treatment. UMass chipped the ball over Hannah for their second goal in the 43rd minute.

Christyn got a shot off in the 46th minute, and Hannah saved a shot in the 57th minute. A minute later they scored by sneaking the ball into our net from the far  post.

UMass perpetuated their reputation as a tough, scrappy, physical team whose energy served them well in the last segment of the game. Usually we try to play them later in the season when we are a little more organized and used to playing with each other! We will look forward to playing them again!!

WPI 19sep2015

Our first game! Nine new players! Double-header with WPI and UMass, playing 30-minute halves.

Sunny and warm with fans from far away! Rose's dad from Utah, Allison's mom from Colorado and her aunt, Hannah's family and adorable puppy Gus!

WPI is a new team this year, so we didn't know quite what to expect.

We wasted no time scoring goals! Rose's shot in the 3rd minute was saved but Sophie put in the rebound, and -- after Christyn's first shot went over -- Mari set up Christyn's goal in the 6th minute.

After WPI had a free kick and a corner, we had two corner kicks, followed by two  shots by WPI saved by Hannah. Mel's shot in the 19th minute went wide but her goal in the 26th minute hit the upper right corner sweetly!

Only two minutes later Haley got on the score sheet!

At half time we spoke about making more diagonal passes and runs. Rose got us a goal in only 3 minutes! Then Allison from Caroline a minute later! Caroline almost scored right after that.

Maria, who just transferred to Dartmouth from Georgetown, scored twice in the span of about a minute, bringing us to 8 goals!

Julia D saved a shot from WPI in the last minute of play.

Brandeis Tournament 18apr2015

Clear skies, warm 60+F and a great fan base greeted us in Waltham, MA! Lindsay's grandparents Doug and Ginger (with a generous gift to the team -- thank you!), Lindsay's aunt and uncle, Julia's parents, Hannah's family with lunch provided to the whole team by her dad Joe, Christyn's folks with more lunch goodies!

Four half-hour games go by so quickly!

We spoke about making good passes, and we looked sharp versus Emmanuel! Shelby, Julia S and Claire got off shots before Claire converted in the 12th minute. Claire got off another shot right after that, and Nat had a chance in the 15th minute. Emmanuel only got off only three shots, but they put one into our net in the 22nd minute.

Azzurri, a club team of former college players, always shows their skill and experience, so we were happy to see shots by Claire, Rose, Shelby and Julia before Azzurri could get off a shot in the 14 minute -- thankfully they were offsides and were not awarded a goal. Christine got her shot saved, and Hannah saved an Azzurri shot at the end of the game.

Bentley looked much improved from last year. They got off the first two shots before Claire's free kick and Rose's shot in the 5 minute. Hannah saved one of Bentley's shots before they scored in the lower left corner of our net in the 7th minute. Claire had another of her shots saved in the 10th minute, and Hannah made a huge save at her left upright in the 19th minute. Bentley fired a rocket of a shot into the upper right corner of our net in the 21st minute. Still working hard, after Caroline G's shot and Julia S's shot were saved, Christine put the ball into their net.

We usually play Brandeis last, but this time it was newcomer Babson, who looked strong and sharp with their passes. Claire and Julia S had shots saved, and Hannah saved a Babson shot early in the game. A questionable call gave Babson a free kick, that Hannah got her fingers on, but an aggressive Babson player stole the ball away to put it into our net in the 11th minute. Claire and Julia S had three more shots, and Babson had a shot over our crossbar before Elise made a huge save by blocking a Babson shot for a corner in the 22nd minute. Babson converted a penalty kick 4 minutes before time was up.

We felt humbled by playing varsity teams, but we did well to be competitive with these teams -- creating many chances and getting off good shots in every game!

at Harvard 12apr2015

After a long very snowy winter everyone was eager to run outdoors! Blue sky, 60+F and windy, we spoke about passing quickly because Harvard is usually feisty and keeping the ball on the ground (wind).

So many fans! Sarah (still in rehab for her ACL repair) and her friend Annie. Molly! Lindsay's grandparents, Christyn's parents, Hannah's family complete with VW bus! And a very welcome addition in Caroline Vanacore!

Harvard insisted on 40-minute halves. We came out strong with crisp passes and quick to 50/50 balls. Julia got off a shot right away, and Shelby almost scored in the 10th minute. Harvard had a couple shots that Hannah saved, and we had three corner kicks in the span of only 6 minutes.

Caroline Gellman (Gell) had a great shot saved in the 34th minute, and there was no score at half-time. At the break, I congratulated the team on their passing and energy getting to the ball quickly. Claire suggested more diagonal passes in the final third, and Julia recommended more shooting.

After only five minutes, Sophie fed Claire a great pass, and Claire was able to beat the Harvard keeper even at a very acute angle. Claire had planned to come off due to an injury from an over-zealous Harvard tackle in the first half, so her goal was her last play, unfortunately.

Hannah saved two more shots, and Harvard had two shots off-target before they got away with being offsides for a through pass to even the score four minutes before full time.

It was a good game with both sides having chances to score. Our passing looked better than theirs, but their energy served them well in the end.
