Middlebury 26oct2019

We had originally hoped to play Middlebury during the week early in October, as we had for many years, but when they were discontinued as a JV team (as we were in 2006), we encouraged them to come on their own. We planned today as a backup in case we didn't go to Regionals (we had 13 players ready to go but felt that we would need at least one more than that to go, and staying home allowed us to have almost everyone at our game).

Katie Bernardez's dad and TDX fraternity brothers were here (he said they were celebrating TDX's 150th year!) and Katie Fearon's mother and high-school sophomore sister, and many other fans to help celebrate the seniors (with a wonderful ceremony before the game) for whom this is their last fall game under partly sunny skies around 10C/50F.

After Middlebury's free kick from half-field, Meredith had a shot from the left side of the field go barely wide. Caris came out boldly to grab the ball off the foot of a Middlebury attacker in the 16th minute (she drove all the way from New Haven where she was visiting family just for our game!!).

Katie F took a look before passing the ball to Zanna, who put the ball into the lower-left side of Middlebury's net in the 19th minute. Then Dani, Sophia and Namya had shots over or wide.

After Aislinn's corner kick, Middlebury had one, too, and then a shot go wide of our net. Then Namya and Jenna had shots saved, and Middlebury had another free kick from half-field. Just before the end of the half, Namya earned corner kicks taken by Sarah twice before Katie F's shot was saved and Jenna's shot went wide.

During the break we spoke about not playing down to Middlebury's level (even though they played much better than the last couple of years), continuing to use give-and-go passes and making shorter passes in order to maintain possession.

Caris made a huge save by saving Middlebury's powerful shot in the 43rd minute. Then Lana's shot was saved before Katie F's saved shot rebounded to Zanna, who got us our 2nd goal in the 45th minute.

Sarah got two more corner kicks and a shot go over their crossbar after Middlebury had a shot go wide. In the 55th minute, Middlebury's corner kick found the head of one of their players for a solid placement into the left side of our net.

Only a minute later, Sarah found the lower-left near-post side of their net. Then after Zanna's shot went wide, Katie F made a cross from the left side that Ella almost was able to slide into their net from the right side, but it went just wide into the side netting.

Aislinn and Sarah had shots go wide before Sarah's free kick from 30 yd. Katie F and Namya had shots saved, and Sarah had one go over their crossbar in the last few minutes.

We were lucky Middlebury were able to come!

Amherst at UMass 6oct2019

Amherst has had trouble in the past finding enough players, so they were not a required game for us but agreed to play after our game with UMass A. It's a very small college but very popular and therefore difficult to get into. They appeared not to have many, if any, substitutes, so we agreed to play 30-minute halves instead of 35's.

We were down a player with Jenny's hurt knee, but we still had four subs. Captain Katie B's great advice was to shake off our former experience with UMass A and just have as much fun as possible. One result of that was witnessing central defenders Katie B and Molly in front of the Amherst goal -- even scoring!

Their keeper did startling well, saving shots by Jordan, Jenna and Zanna, who also saw several of hers go wide or over their crossbar.

Aislinn put two power shots from the left side just barely wide in the 15th and 17th minutes before Mudia's shot was deflected for a corner.

Lana opened our scoring in the 19th minute with a shot from the left side to the lower-right side of the Amherst net. A minute later, Aislinn set up Jenna for our second goal.

After another of Jordan's shots was saved, Jenna earned a corner and Claire had a shot go wide. Then in the 26th minute Aislinn made a beautiful spinning turn and shot the ball into their net for our third goal.

Kalā showed her quality a minute later with a high, arching ball that sailed over the keeper's head into their net. Mudia's shot went over before Zanna's corner kick and Kalā's shot saved just before halftime.

Jordan had the first shot of the second half saved before Zanna's corner. Jenna had another shot barely go wide before Aislinn sent in another perfect shot from the left side of the field that entered the upper-right corner of their net for our 5th goal in the 34th minute.

Only a minute later Jordan scored with a perfect shot from the left side of the field very near the end-line (at a very acute angle) into the right side-netting for our 6th goal.

Ella had a shot saved and had a corner kick before Jenna's shot went wide. In the 40th minute Zanna earned a free kick, Jordan's shot was saved but Kalā put the rebound into the Amherst net for our 7th goal.

Mudia had a shot saved before she got our 8th goal in the 42nd minute, and she had another shot saved after Kalā had a shot go wide.

Molly went on a superb dribbling spree, sailing all the way up the field and having her shot saved before Sophia converted in the 48th minute for our 9th goal.

Katie B made her way to the front of the field, too, having her first shot saved but her second enter the lower-left side of the Amherst net in the 50th minute.

Zanna had shots saved and go over before Ella scored from the left side of the field with a shot into the upper-right side of their net for our 11th goal in the 53rd minute.

Mudia had a shot saved and Ella had a shot go over the crossbar before Zanna's corner and shot wide.

Molly made another surge upfield and scored in the lower-right side of their net for our 12th goal, and Zanna did the same in the 60th minute to bring us to 13 goals.

It was a relaxing way to end an otherwise unsavory day!

at UMass A 6oct2019

Returning to the same firm mostly-weeds field where we played UMass B, we found overcast skies but fine 50F/10C soccer weather for our game at noon with the undefeated team in our division. We had 1:1 draws with them the last two falls but never enjoyed playing them because of their pushy/physical/jersey-tugging style.

With five substitutes, we were a little sparse in attendance (the lowest this fall), but we might have expected that with three away games scheduled in one weekend -- something we usually can avoid!

Having another game with Amherst College's club team immediately after this one, our plan ahead of time was for 35-minute halves.

We spoke about keeping the ball moving quickly in order to preserve possession and avoid being tackled. Katie Reisman's parents and puppy were there, along with some acquaintances of our players.

UMass immediately got into our third, down the left-hand side and had a shot bounce off the left upright then into our goal. We were horrified to have Jenny go down soon after that with what she was very sure was a torn ACL; we didn't see any contact, but the lumpy field could have contributed to stress on her knee. We immediately got ice on it and had the UMass trainer help her.

After UMass had another shot go wide, they were awarded a free kick in their third before Lana put a serious shot on target that was saved.

Zanna earned a corner that Aislinn took in the 18th minute, and Mudia's shot soon after that was blocked for a corner that Zanna took. UMass got two more free kicks before Katie Reisman made a crucial block of a UMass shot in the 24th minute. UMass got another free kick from 25 yd that went wide.

Aislinn sent in a power shot from the left side of the field that was saved in the 29th minute, and after UMass took another free kick from their third and had a shot go over our crossbar she had another chance at their goal but her shot went wide.

During the break, we suggested quicker passes, taking on their defenders, sending diagonal passes, having our wing players use the width and head to the corners for crosses, making ground passes instead of lofted passes, keeping at it and not giving up.

Caris was able to save the first UMass shot of the second half but they put the rebound into the lower left side of our net in the 36th minute.

Aislinn's shot was wide and Ella's was saved before Aislinn's corner in the 39th minute. Molly made a heroic cleanance of a UMass shot for their corner, which was followed by a shot they put over our crossbar.

Ella earned a free kick in the 47th minute that was taken by Katie B, and Claire had her shot go wide and Mudia's shot was just barely wide just after that.

UMass earned another free kick (we felt that they were getting the better calls even though they seemed to foul us and pull at our jerseys a lot!) in the 50th minute from 25 yd, but Caris did well to save it; then they put another shot over our crossbar.

After Aislinn's corner in the 55th minute, Sophia had her shot go wide, and Zanna got a great chance at their goal when UMass was judged to have handled the ball -- her free kick from about 20-25 yd was saved.

UMass had another free kick before Zanna had another shot saved in the 66th and Mudia had a shot go wide. We were not giving up!

Caris came out boldly in the 69th minute to grab the ball off the foot of a UMass attacker and them made another save just after that. UMass had a shot go wide just before Ella had her shot go barely wide.

It felt like a kick in our collective stomach to have Jenny suffer a knee injury and for us to come away with our first loss even while matching UMass in shots and saves. We were very disappointed in the lumpy weedy field, the officiating and the UMass pushy/jersey-tugging playing style, but we did have many chances and should feel good about that!

at UVM 5oct2019

Starting out at freezing temperatures when we went to pick up our rental vans, the drive to Burlington was magical with blue skies and trees turning their green to reds and yellows. Most often we play on their turf field, but we were directed to their grass "Centennial Field" today.

With 17 players -- some or our players had Rush and frisbee conflicts -- we were out-numbered by their 24 (or so), and historically UVM is a very strong team that has been difficult to beat (we lost 0:1 last fall at home). We usually try to schedule games during Rush at home, but with so many home games last year the fair plan was for us to travel more this fall.

Our last trip to this field was in pretty intense rain, but we did well that day. One of the UVM players got so frustrated by not being able to score on us , after one of her fouls on us she got a yellow card -- very unusual for this league!

The field was bumpy but soft and well covered in grass rather than the weeds we found at UMass, and the bright sun made it feel more like 70F/20+C, so we didn't need any of the gloves I brought.

We spoke about keeping the ball moving quickly since we expected UVM to put high pressure on us. Sophia's great energy in the midfield immediately earned us a free kick just before UVM almost scored on a shot that barely went wide.

UVM had a corner and free kick before Katie Fearon used her incredible skill and speed to beat her defenders, sending a pass for Zanna to slot into the right side of the UVM net in the 16th minute.

UVM had some threatening passes but seemed to resort to longer 50/50 passes just as we settled down and started making better/shorter passes rather than more frenzied passes -- demonstrating one of our big strengths that we are quick learners and astute problem-solvers.

Jenna had a great shot saved just after UVM's free kick and just before their two corner kicks, which could have been threatening given the number of tall UVM players.

Bri came up big in the 32nd minute by stepping out to catch a ball sent in. That might have been the same time a UVM player fouled Bri by running directly into her after she got her hands on the ball.

Mudia had a great shot saved in the 34th minute for a corner taken by Meredith, and Aislinn had her powerful shot from a long distance saved. Sophia's quickness earned us another free kick just before halftime; Zanna did very well to get her free kick over the UVM wall and on target, but it was saved.

During the break we suggested simpler/shorter passes rather than longer ones, switching the attack, more communication, using the width of the field, quicker passes to beat their skillful center midfielders and containing rather than trying to get the ball from them.

Ella used her amazing skill and speed to beat several defenders before her shot beat the UVM keeper and rolled toward the left upright of the UVM goal. Sarah was there to tap in the rebound in the 44th minute.

Aislinn had a free kick just before UVM had another threatening shot go wide, and Caris bravely came out quickly to quash a UVM attack in the 46th minute.

UVM got another good chance with a free kick from about 19 yd, but they were unable to put it on target. Immediately after that, Katie F sprinted by several defenders and had a great shot saved.

UVM had another shot go wide in the 56th minute just before Katie F's cross was blocked for a corner after she made another great run up the right side of the field.

Sarah showed her shot-taking ability in the 70th minute, awarded with a free kick due to its being handled by a UVM player about 19 yd out. Her free kick hit the upright, but Jenna quickly got her head on it to put it into the UVM net.

After UVM had another shot go wide, they somehow got in behind Caris to find an open net two minutes before time was up. Mudia responded with a powerful shot just barely wide to the right of their net in the last minute of the game.

Sarah, our president, remarked how proud she was of our team -- a fitting statement in light of UVM's strength.  We showed our learning abilities and immense skill in defense -- special thanks to Katie B, Molly, Kanā, Lana and Aislinn, aided also by midfielders Sophia, Claire, Ella, Jenna, Meredith and Katie F who ran back to help. Even forwards Namya, Sarah, Mudia and Zanna got back behind the ball many times, helping us all defend as a unit.

And of course we attacked as a unit, too, putting together good passes and runs to set up 13 shots to UVM's 6.

Molly's dad came with his high-quality camera all the way from Washington, DC, and her sister came up from Middlebury with some of her basketball teammates. They celebrated Molly's birthday and brought cupcakes, drinks and other goodies for the players. THANKS!

Assumption 28sep2019

Assumption just joined our division this fall, but we learned a little about them last weekend when Sophia introduced us to her friend from high school, Char, who founded the team in Worcester, MA.

We greeted them with blue skies and warm near 80F/25C temperatures at Sachem around noon for our 1pm game. We were missing Katie Reisman and Cate Rozelle due to Rush, but Jordan Isaacs was back after suffering an ankle injury.

Sophia's folks came to watch and to be her support team for a marathon (!!!) tomorrow in Keene, and some classmates of players on our team came to see the game, too!

We were immediately in Assumption's third, with Aislinn's corner kick in the 4th minute and Nam's shot hitting their crossbar before Kelly's corner kick found Meredith for our first goal in the 5th minute.

Jenna had her shot go over their crossbar and Katie F had a shot go wide before Zanna's shot was saved. After Meredith earned another corner, Ells's shot went over their crossbar and Jordan's shot was saved.

Katie F put the ball into the mid-level left side of their goal for our second goal in the 19th minute, Sarah had a shot go over, and Nam had a shot saved. Immediately after that, Sarah earned a penalty kick that she converted handily in the 23rd minute.

Jenny put in a sweet shot from the right side of the field into the upper 90 left side of their goal for our fourth goal in the 25th minute just before Bri stepped up to catch a lofted ball.

Katie F put in another goal from the left side of the field to the mid-level right side of their goal (a far-post goal) in the 27th minute before Sophia's shot was saved and her cross to Jordan was sent wide.

Jordan had another shot saved just before slotting the ball into the lower-right side of their net for our 6th goal in the 36th minute. She had another shot ring off the upright before Ella had a shot saved for a corner.

Jordan sent in a perfect cross for Ella to head into their goal for our 7th just before the break.

We discussed being more diagonal and quicker for the second half. Assumption got a corner kick just before Sarah's shot was saved in the 44th minute. Then her shot hit the crossbar before Jenny's shot went over.

Bend-it-like-Aislinn scored with her left-footed corner kick in the 56th minute even though the keeper got her fingertips on the ball. Then Claire slotted a low shot into the left side of their net for our 9th goal.

After Aislinn's shot was saved in the 62nd minute, Sophia had a shot go over. Aislinn's perfect cross from the left side of the field found Sophia at the right (far) post, whose shot banged into the mid-level left side of their net for our 10th goal.

Assumption did well not to seem bothered by the high score, and we were happy to have so many goals in case it helps us break a tie for getting to Regionals.

at UMass B 22sep2019

We arrived in Amherst around 11am to find sunny 80sF/~30C temperature and a very dry and firm field of mostly weeds - probably still better than turf! We noticed after the game that relatives of Lana's and Claire's were there!

We spoke before the game about our rocky history with UMass teams -- both 'A' and 'B' teams are really good but very aggressive. So we suggested keeping the ball moving quickly to encourage our possession and to avoid injury.

Kelly immediately got a free kick, and Meredith had a shot saved, before UMass had their free kick go over our crossbar. Kelly had another free kick in the 6th minute. It was hot and dry, so we were fortunate to have 6 subs every 10 minutes.

In the 13th minute, UMass had a shot ring off our crossbar and another just afterwards go over - whew! Zanna had a couple shots go wide before UMass got incredibly lucky in the 21st minute when we cleared their shot but they put the rebound into our net to put them up one goal.

Dani had a really solid shot blocked, Sarah had one go over their crossbar, and Caris came out smartly to smother a UMass advance in the 26th.

Kala set up Jenna on the left wing in the 29th minute -- her composure and patience paid off wonderfully with our first goal to even the score.

Katie F's cross to Ella got us a corner kick in the 30th minute, followed by Katie R's shot wide. Zanna had a shot go wide before Mudia beat several defenders and struck the ball strongly -- the UMass keeper got her hand on it but it was too powerful for her, and it rolled into their net for our second goal.

During the break we discussed using the width of the field, being quicker, attacking together and looking for opportunities to drop the ball back to the 18.

Katie F did her magic again with her incredibly dribbling skills to beat several defenders before having her shot go just wide. After a UMass corner kick, they got another huge piece of luck when their lofted ball bounced awkwardly and unexpectedly high over Caris' head for their second goal in the 60th minute.

But Dani sent in a ball for Sarah to volley to put us ahead again in the 63rd. After that, we continued attacking as did UMass, with Zanna and Aislinn putting shots wide and UMass doing the same.

It was a very intense and sometimes pushy event, but our shot total versus theirs demonstrated how strong we were today -- it was extremely impressive to play so well already (only our second day playing games with our amazing new 2023's), especially in what felt like 90F on the pitch!

at Holy Cross 21sep2019

Our second game of the day was on a really well-groomed grass field down the hill from the turf field. The temperature seemed much more accommodating due the grass absorbing some of the sun's energy.

Kelly wasted no time getting forward in the first minute, beating her mark and getting off a shot that went wide. Nam had a shot go over before Kelly made a great block of a Holy Cross cross for their corner kick in the 3rd minute.

Nam had a shot saved in the 8th minute, Holy Cross had a free kick, and Nam had another shot saved before converting three minutes later with a mid-height right side of their net. Only a minute later, Zanna did the same, followed by Sarah whose goal was in the same location in the next minute!

After Kalā's free kick, Mudia had a shot saved, and our PK a minute later hit the upright. Sophia earned a free kick skillfully taken by Kalā, who had a shot saved right after that.

Katie F made a sweet step-over move to create some space to get a shot off that just barely went wide in the last minute of the half. During the break we spoke about making more diagonal dribbles or passes and building more out of the back.

Bri saved a Holy Cross before Katie F's two shots were saved before her third shot in four minutes hit the right side of their net for our fourth goal.

Lana got a shot saved in the 38th minute before Zanna had one shot go wide and another go solidly into their net. Sarah had a shot go wide before Claire and Katie F had shots go over. After Aislinn's free kick, Sophia and Mudia had shots saved.

In the 18th minute, Holy Cross converted after a free kick. Bri saved the shot they got off just after that. Katie and Zanna had shots go wide before Lana converted with a carefully placed roller-shot into their net in the 54th minute.

Zanna and Molly had shots go wide in the last few minutes. It was a great day for our team to play so well after so little time together!
