Middlebury 5Nov2022

SENIOR DAY!!! After Middlebury told us they couldn’t play Homecoming weekend Oct 29, they offered instead to come today; we were delighted at their commitment to come - many times in the past teams have not appeared for this late-season game! Krista, relieved that her knee will heal soon, came, and so did Caris, whose jaw is still wired shut but feels much better now! Eliza’s parents and Rachel’s parents and sister joined us, along with a large group of cheering students! Some sun and warm 20+C/70+F!

We also owe Middlebury gratitude for offering to play us twice - our visit and results earned there during the League-game period must have helped us reach Regionals. 

In our attempt to get near their goal, we were called for a foul and Middlebury was awarded a free kick in their third. Ash had a shot saved before she took a corner kick in the first few minutes; Ella had a shot go wide.

Sara had a shot go high just before Ella had a shot saved. A few minutes later, Ella sailed a ball high and over their goalkeeper for our first goal in the 10th minute. Dani had a shot saved before Avery sent a rocketed ball into Middlebury’s net for our second goal. 

Our passing was expert, with many give-and-go passes and switching the ball across the field. Avery did her magic again, this time with a high-arching shot from the right side of the field into the upper-right corner of their net. 

Mudia had a shot saved before Ash’s free kick went wide. Lizzy also had a shot saved before Kalyn dribbled past defenders and fired a shot that their keeper couldn’t stop. Mudia had a shot go high before Middlebury got a free kick in our third. 

Avery had a shot saved before she scored her third goal of the game in the 38th minute on the mid-left side. 

After the break, several players switched positions, with Kalā going up top, Mudia right wing, Eliza in center mid and Abby B left mid. Kalā got a shot off within seconds but it was saved. A few minutes later her shot ricocheted off the cross-bar! 

Claire’s free kick presented a good chance but it sailed high before Middlebury created a chance that Kelly prevented with a bold save. Kalā and Mudia had shots go wide before Genevieve had one go high. 

Ash expertly took three corner kicks and two free kicks - one that curled beautifully to their far post, finding Kalyn, whose shot went wide.

Abby B had a shot go high and Ella a shot wide before Abby B, Genevieve and Ash had shots saved. SO MANY SHOTS!!!

Mudia earned a corner kick taken by Ash; Caitlin’s shot was saved, and Kalā got off one last shot that went wide.

We celebrated the seniors with heart-warming presentations by our players and many hugs! We were so fortunate to have so many AMAZING PLAYERS from the Class of 2023!!!

Regionals vs Northeastern and Siena 22Oct2022, UConn 23Oct2022

It’s difficult to get into the Region 1 Tournament - only 24 teams out of about 100 make it. This year - similar to 2014 and 2017 - we got in from the waitlist because we had good points and a few other teams decided not to go. As a result, the players were very excited to go, even though it’s six hours away and requires leaving the Friday before Saturday/Sunday’s three games. 

After our long drive, routed this time across Vermont via Manchester and through Albany because of heavy traffic near NYC, we checked into the Bordentown, NJ, Red Roof Inn after stopping for dinner nearby. We met at 6:30am to get a little breakfast at Dunkin Donuts before heading to Friendship Fields for our 8am game with Northeastern. It was 2C/36F and the dew made the fields slick, but the Sun eventually appeared and warmed up nicely.

Erika’s mom was our treasured fan, fully equipped with drinks and snacks!

Northeastern

Northeastern has always been very physical, and today was no exception. But we adapted quickly and kept the ball moving well, matching their high pressure. They had a couple free kicks and a corner kick before Mudia had a shot go wide in the 16th minute. 

Lana had the same experience minute later before Kalyn’s perfect cross from the right side set up Genevieve, who was wonderfully wide open at the far post - she smartly slotted the ball lower-right for her goal in the 19th minute.

Kalyn had a shot saved before Northeastern’s corner kick and Kelly Z’s free kick earned by Zanna. Lizzy had a shot go wide. Zanna earned another free kick from midfield for Kelly Z before Northeastern’s free kick from their third.

Mudia earned a corner taken by Ash before Northeastern’s penalty kick was awarded when Caris came out to prevent their shot that went wide. Early in the second half, Mudia had a shot blocked for a corner taken by Lizzy.

Avery had a good chance in the 48th with her solid shot saved. Then Northeastern had two corner kicks and a shot high.

Claire had a good shot saved in the 56th before Northeastern’s two goals to upper left and lower right. Caris made a save in the 65th before Kelly Z earned a free kick from our third. Ash had a shot go wide and Avery pinged a shot off their upright before Northeastern’s free kick from midfield.

Genevieve earned a corner, resulting in two corner kicks for Lizzy. Avery and Kalyn had shots go wide before Avery earned a free kick from midfield. Northeastern had a corner and a shot go over our cross-bar before Caris saved a shot.

Genevieve had a shot go wide and Northeastern had another shot go high before Lizzy took one last corner kick in the 80th minute.

Siena

We had overheard some of Siena’s game with UConn next to us during our game with Northeastern, and we learned that they tied that game, so we expected them to be a strong team. We planned to make better passes in this game!

Avery got us off well within the first few minutes with a solid shot that was saved before Siena had a free kick from midfield and a shot go wide. Abby B earned a free kick from midfield that Kate took and Siena took one from their third before Erika took one in their third. 

Avery had another solid attempt in the 16th minute, but her shot was saved. A minute later, Mudia made a wonderful cross that found Genevieve, who sent herself onto the ball and followed it into their net - what you could call a full-body shot?

Siena had a shot go wide before Mudia had the same experience a minute later.

Lizzy passed to Genevieve, who found Kalyn in the 24th minute for our second goal. Ash earned a corner kick for Zanna, Claire earned a free kick from midfield, and Lana earned and then took perfectly a free kick in their third that was saved.

Mudia and Abby H earned corner kicks late in the half, taken by Lizzy, Mudia followed up with a shot blocked and Kate with a shot wide before Zanna’s shot was saved.

During the break, we relished our improved passing!

Avery again headed us in the right direction with a shot, but it went wide. After Siena’s free kicks they sent a shot wide as well and had one saved by Caris. Kalyn earned a free kick in their third that was taken by Avery just before Mudia’s shot was saved.

Avery took a corner kick and had a shot go high before Siena and Ash took free kicks. Siena had a shot go high, Abby B had a shot saved, and Caris saved a shot from Siena in the 53rd minute. After Siena’s free kick, Genevieve had a shot go wide, and Caris made another save on a Siena free kick in our third.

Ash took another free kick in the 59th minute before Genevieve earned a corner for Abby B to take. Then Erika did well to get sufficiently upfield to get off a powerful shot that went wide.

Siena, Ash and Lana had free kicks and Lizzy took two corner kicks just before Genevieve beautifully drilled a shot into the lower-left corner of their goal.

Caris made another save from a Siena free kick in our third before Genevieve earned us another free kick. Then she and Erika had shots saved, Lizzy earned and took another corner kick, and Siena put a shot from a free kick over our cross-bar in the last minute.

We were delighted to be playing so well with good passing-possession, switching sides, and being more calm than in the previous game with Northeastern. An additional reward was having the best points for a second-place team; we,began to think that we might get to play a quarterfinal game if we did well vs UConn!

UConn

Our last game with the first-seed team at the top of the rankings was on turf at Bordentown High School. After a good warmup under cloudy skies and 10C/50F, we found UConn to be very aggressive and physical. They made the first shots, high and wide, before Avery almost got us on the score sheet in the 10th minute, but her shot was saved.

Caris made a save before Ash’s clearance for a UConn corner kick in the 11th minute. UConn slotted a shot from the left side into th3e lower-right side of our goal in the 16th minute. 

Lana had a shot go wide before Erika made a beautiful shot on a free kick from midfield that was saved, and Genevieve earned a free kick from midfield taken by Erika. Soon after that, Erika took a powerful and accurate free kick from midfield that was saved.

Ash almost converted on a free kick in their third, but her shot glanced off the cross-bar. After UConn‘s free kick from midfield and a corner, they made a shot that Caris saved, and while she was on the ground she was kicked in the jaw, losing a tooth. We took about ten minutes having her see the EMT and looking in vain for her tooth; the rest of the half was suspended while our team decided whether to keep playing.

The EMT made several phone calls, and advised that she go to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Caris’ friend Gabi, a Class of 2022 graduate, wearing a Dartmouth Soccer cap and bearing donuts for our team, helped us look for the tooth and then took Caris to the hospital as we finished our game with Kate Clark in goal.

Kate immediately made a save before UConn did a repeat of their first goal. They had a shot go high before Avery put one on target but was saved. UConn put a shot wide before Kate came up with another big save in the 57th minute; Rachel took a free kick from midfield.

Zanna earned a free kick taken by Erika before Kate came up with another big save. UConn fired a point-blank shot to increase their lead in the 62nd minute and followed that up with a free kick that founf the left side of our net before Avery’s free mick in their third in the last minute of play.

We all got to see the xray of Caris’ jaw - so disturbing, but she handled the whole event with amazing calm and grace. I sent the Tournament director a summary of what happened and thanked him for the really helpful EMT who helped Caris. Time will tell whether this third time at Regionals will be our last.

UVM 15Oct2022

UVM is a good team to play because of their strength and quick passing, so we always look forward to playing them. Their trip here almost didn’t happen when they had trouble getting vans, but they were able somehow to make it down for a gorgeous, sunny 20C/~70F day with Molly’s parents and three other dads here - Ash’s, Zanna’s and Ella’s! 

Ella wasted no time getting off a shot - saved - in the 4th minute, as both teams made quick passes and pressed heavily to regain possession. Sara earned a free kick in their third and put her shot on target - saved- before she had another shot saved and Mudia had one go wide. UVM put a shot over and had a free kick in our third.

Eliza earned a corner in the 18th minute before Dani blocked a UVM shot for their corner, after which their shot went wide. A couple minutes later Abby B earned a free kick in their third- her shot was high. 

Abby H had her shot saved before UVM’s went wide, Nathalie’s was saved and Mudia’s went just barely wide. Lizzy earned and took a free kick in their third that was saved. UVM’s shot went wide just before the break.

We were happy with our passing and possession and encouraged continued shooting.

Genevieve and Kalyn had shots go wide before Genevieve had a shot saved and Ash put a shot wide. Then UVM took a free kick from their third before Genevieve set up Kalyn whose shot was saved for a corner taken by Ash. 

Mudia had a shot go high, and Zanna and Abby B had shots go wide before UVM took a free kick from mid-field and then had a shot go high. Caitlin earned a free kick from our third taken by Erika, and UVM had a free kick from their third.

Abby H firmly one-touched a rebound that rocketed into the upper-left corner of the UVM goal for our first goal in the 63rd minute. Ella and Caitlin had shots saved just before Zanna’s excellent corner kick found Lana, whose shot was deemed to have been handled by a UVM player. Lana stepped up to the spot and struck the ball firmly, slotting it to the side and making it impossible for their keeper to save.

UVM had a free kick in our third, but their shot went wide before Avery had shots saved and go high. Kelly Z earned and took a free kick from midfield that went wide before Daniella’s shot went high.

We were delighted with the result, especially after feeling let down by the defeat at their field earlier this season.

At Middlebury 8Oct2022

Fall foliage! We went over gorgeous/scenic Rochester Gap (elev. 2200’) and got an eye-ful! Perfect 10C/50F temperature and sunny with a mobbed Middlebury campus for their Homecoming weekend, and Molly’s dad joined us again and took more amazing photos! 

Ash’s corner kick in the third minute found Kelly Z, who assisted Mudia’s goal. After Lizzy’s shot was saved, Mudia had one go high. Lana in the 10th minute from the left side drilled a shot into the upper-right side of their net for our second goal.

Zanna assisted Kalyn two minutes later for our third goal. Kalyn had a shot go wide before Middlebury got a free kick in our third that Caris saved. Caitlin set up Kalyn in the 19th minute for our fourth goal. 

Zanna’s shot two minutes later hit the upright before Kalyn earned a free kick from mid-field for Genevieve to take. Nathalie had a shot go over before Molly earned a free kick in our third for Ash to take in the 30th.

Nathalie took two corner kicks, and Lizzy earned a free kick in their third taken solidly and put on target by Erika, whose shot was saved in the 36th minute. Ash’s shot a few minutes later was wide.

Early in the second half, Caris saved a shot Middlebury made from a free kick in our third before Ash, Zanna and Kalyn had shots saved while Nathalie had one go wide. 

Genevieve in the span of only four minutes earned two free kicks for Lana and Ash and had shots saved and go wide. Kalyn earned a corner for Lizzy, Ash had a shot go wide and Lizzy’s was saved before Genevieve’s went wide. Ash earned and took a free kick from mid-field before Lizzy earned a took one in their third.

Caitlin had a shot saved just before central-defender Molly got all the way up to their left end-line, where she put a perfect cross for Zanna to convert in the 69th minute for our 5th goal.

After Ash’s shot was saved a minute later, Caris saved Middlebury’s third shot of the game. Ash had another shot saved before Mudia earned a corner for Lizzy to serve up for Mudia’s shot that was just barely wide.

It was great to see our give-and-go passing and switching across the back - just as the NWSL professionals do it!

At UVM 2Oct2022

We were thankful to have 5 subs going to see such as strong team as UVM - being Parents’ Weekend and starting to be a busy exam time meant there were bound to be schedule conflicts. We even had fans - with Krista accompanying us even though she was injured yesterday and Molly’s dad, Tom, there taking photos with his amazing gear. Chilly 10C/50F and very windy from the north, we expected the ball to move in unexpected ways on their turf called “Virtue Field.” 

Both teams passed well and pressed hard, with UVM getting the first free kick in our third in the 5th minute, but Caris came to our rescue! Caris made another save just after Lizzy’s shot went wide. After Lizzy’s corner kick, UVM had three before Mudia had her solid shot saved in the 14th minute.

UVM had a shot go high before Sara’s was wide and Abby B earned a free kick from mid-field that was taken by Kelly R. Lizzy came close to scoring in the 26th when her shot hit the side-netting. Abby B had a similar experience when her shot was saved two minutes later.

UVM capitalized on a rebound amid a crowded penalty-box area in the 29th minute. Genevieve tried to set things right seconds later but her shot was saved.

Ash earned and took a free kick in their third that went wide before Kelly Z and UVM had free kicks from mid-field.

After the break, Lana earned a free kick in mid-field taken by Kelly R before UVM had a free kick go wide and a shot saved by Caris. After another free kick, UVM had a powerful shot almost finger-tip saved by Caris hit the top-back of our net.

They had another free kick from their third before Lizzy earned a free kick in mid-field taken by Ash. Genevieve earned a free kick in their third taken by Ash that led to a shot by Sara that sailed over their cross-bar.

UVM had a shot go wide just before their corner kick earned when Kelly Z made a clearance; their corner kick found the top inside of our net just under our cross-bar.

Genevieve had a shot wide before Avery had a similar experience after Sara earned a free kick in their third. Ash took two corner kicks before Abby B’s shot went wide in the 63rd.

Daniella had a powerful shot blocked just before UVM had two shots go wide; then on a free kick they sailed another ball just under our cross-bar. Ash had a free kick from mid-field before Avery’s shot was saved for a corner taken by Lizzy; Ash had a shot go wide just after that. 

Caris saved another shot just before Avery’s free kick was saved. We made good passes and pressed them well when we lost the ball, so it didn’t feel like a representative result for us. But we know that it’s good to play a good team like UVM, and we had fun doing it!
