UVM 12Oct2025

We always expect a big challenge from UVM. It was Senior Day, and Homecoming weekend, so we were delighted to see our graduated players Lizzy Strapp ‘25 and Kalyn Dawes ‘25 and Lizzy Hennessey ‘09 with her wife Tam and daughter Oakley ‘45 (?!) in addition to Nicole’s dad and Chloe’s parents - maybe others?

The weather was perfect - starting in the 60sF/15C and feeling warm from direct sunshine. We spoke about keeping the ball moving.

Both teams showed high energy and intensity. Nicole got is started with an early shot blocked before Genevieve had a shot saved for a corner kick that was taken by Nicole. UVM took two free kicks in our third, the second one leading to a shot saved by Meg.

They had a shot go wide before Meg saved two of their shots. Then in the 17th minute, Nicole sent a pass to Neva, who flicked the ball into the left upper corner of their goal. Right after that, Meg saved two more UVM shots and sent one wide.

Chloe earned a free kick from midfield that was taken by Emeline before Pine saved two UVM shots. Mia J had a shot go wide before she was taken down for Colleen C’s free kick taken from midfield.

In the 29th minute, UVM’s free kick from midfield found the back of our net to even the score before a UVM shot was blocked for a corner. Pine saved their next shot, but the rolled the rebound into the left side of our goal to give them an advantage.

Mia J had a shot go wide before Sage earned a corner kick that was taken by Molly. Then in the last minute of the half, Pine came out to squelch a UVM attack before they sent a shot wide.

During the break, we discussed passing to feet on the ground, using the width of the field, stepping before they do and defending all together.

UVM had a shot go wide before their two free kicks from midfield - one resulting in a shot that went wide. They got a corner kick before sending a shot from the left side of the field into the upper right part of our net in the 46th minute.

Nicole and Neva had shots go wide before Maddie had hers saved. Kya earned a free kick in our third that was taken by Neva, whose shot was saved.

After UVM’s free kick from midfield, Genevieve and Mia J had shots saved and Mia J had one go over their crossbar. In the 72nd minute Sage almost scored when her diving header went just wide.

Mia J had a shot saved before UVM sent a shot wide and Carly saved one of their shots. Mia J had another chance to score in the last minute of the game, but her shot was saved.

It mostly felt like a pretty even game. They were ecstatic while we organized to celebrate our seniors with wonderful heart-felt presentations.

at UMass A and B 5Oct2025

UMass bullied us into playing both games with their A and B teams at their field back-to-back instead of having one of them on a different date on our field - and they scheduled the two games on a Sunday no less. Very unsavory behavior!

By the time we left it was nearly 90F and on turf it felt like 100F/35+C. We had the misfortune of a conflict with the 50-mile hike from Moosilauke to Hanover, injuries and other commitments that left us with only 13 players for the first game and 12 for the second.

We wanted 30-minute halves because of having to play two games with few subs and high temperatures, but UMass A insisted on 35-minute halves. Not very nice hosts.

But we had such nice fans - Emeline’s mom brought great-looking fruit and Molly’s and Colleen Cranna’s parents were there!

We spoke about making short passes to feet in order to try to keep possession.

UMass A immediately put us under pressure and earned two early corner kicks before a shot of theirs hit our crossbar and Erika saved another. She caught a cross from another of their corner kicks before they sent a shot into the lower left corner of our net in the 12th minute.

After their next shot went over our crossbar, Pine had a shot saved before she earned a free kick in midfield that was taken by Meg. Erika made a other save before they had two more corner kicks, and near the end of the half she caught two more of the corner kicks.

During the break, we noted our good communication and suggested keeping it simple, releasing the ball quickly, switching the attack more often, going together as a team and looking up more to plan our passes.

After Erika took a free kick in our third, UMass shot hit our upright twice and had a shot go wide before they scored on a shot from the right side of the field into the lower left corner of our net.

Erika saved two more shots before their corner kick three minutes from time; then their shot in the 68th minute from the right side of the field made it into the lower left corner of our net. After that, Sage earned a free kick in our third.

After about 30 minutes we faced UMass B, who insisted on 40-minute halves! Even less hospitable, we thought. We were down to one sub but weren’t complaining!

UMass B in the first minute scored on a shot from the right side of the field to the lower left corner of our net then three minutes later did the same but to the upper left corner of our net.

After their shot over our crossbar and a free kick from midfield, Sage saved their shot in the 9th minute. Emeline took a free kick from midfield before they scored a third goal with a high shot from about 25m.

But we weren’t giving up! Neva and Emeline both had shots go wide before Colleen B made a beautiful shot from the left side of the field into the upper right corner of their net in the 16th minute. She had another shot saved and Katelyn had a shot go wide before a UMass free kick in our third and a corner kick.

Erika earned and took a free kick in our third before Sage saved a shot for a UMass corner kick; their ensuing shot went over our crossbar. In the last minute of the half, Neva had a shot go wide.

After the break, UMass B had a shot go wide before Colleen B earned a free kick from midfield that was taken by Meg. Emeline, now in goal, made a save for a UMass corner kick before they scored again with a shot from the right side of the field into the left corner of our net.

Molly had a shot go wide before Pine converted on Molly’s beautiful corner kick in 54th minute. After Katelyn’s shot was saved, Emeline made another save before Katelyn earned a free kick in midfield that was taken by Sage; immediately after that Neva did her magic to score our third goal in the 58th minute.

UMass took another corner kick before Emeline saved two more shots. Then she saved a penalty kick! They had two more corner kicks and a shot wide before Erika earned a free kick in our third and had a shot saved.

Emeline made a other save before they scored again in the 71st minute. She made yet another save before Molly took a corner kick and Katelyn had a shot go wide.

At the end of the game, they had a shot go wide before stringing together several passes and scoring their sixth goal. Emeline made another save in the 80th minute!

We were proud of our tenacity!

Williams 4Oct2025

The last time we played Williams was 13Oct2013 in Williamstown, a scenic campus with beautiful foliage at that time. They had planned to play us again in the fall of 2023 but were unable to make it. This fall they joined our Region1 club soccer league, bringing the number of teams in our division to nine. Avery set the time for our game at 11am so as not to conflict with sorority rush bid day.

The weather was glorious with blue skies and 20+C/70+F. We were grateful that Steve Small, our officials coordinator, was able to find the required three officials for our game. We were delighted to see Colleen Cranna’s parents here from Virginia!

We spoke about making good, short passes rather than long passes that can easily be intercepted. Williams looked sprightly and put a great deal of pressure on us, but we prevailed in the 3rd minute when Neva made a perfect pass to Mia H, whose shot from the left side of the field made into the lower left corner of their net for our first goal.

Mia H had another shot saved and Williams got off a corner kick before Katelyn profited from Williams GK miscue for our second goal. Abby took a free kick from midfield before Genevieve smothered a Williams cross in the 19th minute.

Neva and Katelyn had shots saved before Williams from what looked an offsides position sent a rocket shot into our net to put them on the scoreboard in the 28th minute. Kya had a shot go wide before Genevieve stopped another cross.

During the break we suggested that with Williams having scored they would come out wanting more - that they had some speedy players and were able to split our back line easily. Other suggestions were to watch our weak side, make short passes, keep stepping, look for passing opportunities. Our switching the side of play was good, and our crosses were effective.

Early in the second half, Pine free kick in their third and Colleen B had two shots blocked before Genevieve made two crucial saves. Neva earned a free kick in their third taken by Pine, whose shot went over, and Katelyn had a shot go over their crossbar before Neva earned and took a corner kick and Kat had a shot go wide.

Meg took a free kick in our third before Genevieve picked off another Williams cross.
Mia H earned and took a corner kick before Genevieve made another save.

Mia H scored in the 60th minute and then Mia J followed suit two minutes later to give us four goals. Pine had a shot saved and Emeline took a free kick in midfield before Genevieve made yet another save! Mia J earned a corner kick that was taken by Neva before Genevieve made another save.

After Williams sent a shot over our crossbar, we had a shot go wide. Mia J had a shot go wide just before Pine converted on her shot from the right side of the field into the lower left corner of the Williams goal in the 80th minute.
